Default Un-toaster

I have a toaster with a problem. It has a large self-adjusting width
single slot with an electric motor to lower and raise the
bread/waffle, whatever. The heating elements consist of 2 long white
ceramic cylinders, one on each side. The problem is that these only
glow, sort of reddish orange, over a small part at both ends.
Consequently the bread toasts more at either end and most of it is
only slightly toasted. Increasing the darkness control only makes the
bread burn at the ends and still slightly golden over most of it. What
is wrong with this toaster?

Have you measured the resistance of the heating elements to see if they are
defective?
