Any comments on that Triton respirator you ordered? Have you put it to use
yet?

Thanks,
Pete

Next issue of Woodshop News. Not this immediate one, I think, but one after.
Very handyd evice, especially for turners. I like that little breeze down
across the inside of the face shield a lot. I've steamed up so damned many
pairs of glasses in my life, it is nice to be out of that loop.

thanks Charlie, I've been looking at one since 3M quite making theirs.
the 3M is very top heavy but it did work well and the breeze did keep
things from fogging up.

This one is not top heavy...got a lot of gear up there, but it's all
lightweight. Tube to filter pack is a bit stiff--they're coming out with a more
flexible one, I hear. But battery and filter all hang from the belt, so it is
very easy on the head.

Quiet in there, too, when you push the muffs into position.

That's permanent. Tinnitus. I just wish it would pick a new lack of rhythm.

Mine's on again off again. Always there, but it has to be pin drop quiet
for me to notice it.

I'm one of the lucky ones, I know. Tinnitus sucks.

KY Highlander asks:

what is Woodshop News? is it a hard copy or electronic newsletter?

Hard copy. It's a magazine--tabloid sized newspaper format--for small woodshop
owners, usually aimed at shop owners with 10 or fewer employees. Good magazine.

Woodshop News, 10 Bokum Rd., Essex, CT 06426. $21.95 annually, 12 issues (two
years is $35.95).

There are scam artists out there selling over-priced subs to Woodshop News and
other woodworking publications, so deal directly, as above. Or customer service
subs, 1-800-243-9177, ET 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Default Powered Dust Hoods- Was Ping: Charlie Self

I see that this month's Wood Magazine did a little "mini-roundup" of
three different brands of these units: the "Aircap 2" ($170), the
"Trend Airshield" ($275) and the Triton ($270). This was not really a
detailed rating thing but a quick paragraph on the editor's
impressions of each one. They seemed to like the triton the best of
the three but downgraded it because the hose linking the belt-mounted
filter to the helmet was stiff and interfered with head movement.
However, they also reported that a "Triton spokesman" said a new more
supple hose will solve this problem on future hoods.

It is stiff, at least the one I got. The company seems pretty responsive, so
I'd guess the replacements are ready to go. I can't imagine the hose being too
expensive to replace.

Larry West asks:

How small is this "little 'mini-roundup'" I'm not seeing it in my
March issue of Wood. Is it in the April issue? I buy 'em
semi-occasionally off the shelf nowadays. Was a better mag 10 years
ago. I'd be interesed in how the powered visors interface with
hearing protection, specifically my Peltor muffs

The Triton has its own set of muffs. I had a fast look at the Trend a month or
so ago, but when I asked Trend for info, I got sent to Woodcraft. My request
for information there was passed on by the product manager and ignored by the
marketing department, so that's an "I dunno."

The Triton also has that neat collar to keep the dust and chips from migrating
up into the respirator area, and down into the neck of your shirt.

I think, but I'm not sure, that the Trend has the battery in the mask, making
it a little head heavy. The Triton's battery is on a belt pack.

Don't know a thing about the Aircap.

yes, the Trend is similar to the old 3M that I have. it is a little top
heavy and tends to tip you forward. Not a problem when mowing the lawn
or "sweeping" the garage with the leaf blower but gets heavy when
turning or sanding for long periods. Conceptually it works well, I would
just like to get the battery (and fan) off my head.

I figured I would have to transfer the "guts" of the peltor to the cups
on the Triton.

Sorry I don't have the issue in front of me as I'm not at home, but
based on the fact that it arrived within the last few days, I'd guess
it's April issue. It is a single page article with a paragraph on
each of the three I mentioned.

DAGS and found this site:
http://www.airwareamerica.com/Triton.htm

I thought $270 was expensive, some of these suckers go for $600+.
Check out that AirMaster 20. Only $479. I wish someone would do a
good review of all these brands. The Triton looks like a quality
unit, and the face shield and ears can be ratcheted up out of the way
when not needed. How noisy is it? (Could I listen to the radio while
hand sanding with this thing running?)

Are any of these units NIOSH rated? If not, you should look closely a
the (NIOSH rated) 3M units.

It's well made. As to noise, it seemed OK to me, but that needs a qualifier: my
tinnitus is so bad it can defy an orchestra (but not the anal apertures around
here with their wheeled sub woofer platforms). I didn't really try it that way
because I kept the muffs in place while cranking up some tools.
