Damn, my first gloat, and it's a mini... *sigh*

Had our usual neighborhood fire/dinner in the driveway last night.... neighbors
surprised me by not only knowing that it was my birthday, but finding out from
my wife that I'd been lusting after a real vice to replace my POS 9" harbor
fright one...

I just finished mounting a real woodworkers vice that actually has a dog and
quick release!!
life is sooo good... lol

Maybe I am just jealous, since I don't have a real woodworking vice, but I
see a gloat as getting something for considerably less than it is worth. A
gift doesn't count unless they got it for considerably less than it was
worth, or they were getting rid of it.
Getting the vice at a garage sale (or ebay or an auction) for $5 would be a
gloat.
Getting the vice from your neighbor because he no longer had a use for it
would be a gloat.
Getting it at HD on clearance for $5 would be a gloat.
Finding it in the street would be a gloat. (Last month I found a piece of
exercise equipment in the street and sold it on Ebay for $375. I don't even
know what it does, but the buyer is happy.)

But maybe I am just jealous. I have a really nice metalworking vice, but it
just isn't the same.

You're right about what makes a gloatworthy subject. From the days of

Vice is a perfectly good spelling for that thingie you attach to a
workbench to hold stuff, as any real dictionary of the *English*
language will attest.

Only if that dictionary is published by Harbor Freight.

Now, go back and check the dictionary that YOU used.

The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language has the following
entry:

"vice (n & v): variant of vise"

Now, *I* wouldn't use it as such, but it is there.

Webster's New World also had it as a variant, chiefly British, of vise.

Had to labour a bit over that one. I wonder if it only applies to a
Record vice g

I don't know if I'd take advice on how to spell in English from anyone named
"Luigi". Just a thought....

I can also give you good advice on how to spell in French. But I'm not
too good in Italian.

That said by a guy who spells "color" and "flavor as "colour"

No, it's "vise" here in 'Murrican and "vice" Over There in the UK.

I'm not sure I want to read about a "vice" that you have that involves
a dog. You may want to a more conventional one like smoking, drinking
or gambling. There's less chance of getting bit.

Neighbor spotted "vise with dog" on my shopping list and became quite
inquisitive! "Just WHAT does this mean?" she blurted.

G'day Mac,
Happy Birthday and may you have many more.
Congrats on the vise. The quick release is invaluable. I wouldn't be

Thanks, John...
The neighbors spend a lot of time visiting at the "neighborhood meeting center"
(my driveway) and I guess they got together and picked a good one...
Being kind of a tool freak, I even like LOOKING at it, it seems so massive and
solid after the vise I was using....

What were once vises [sic] are now habits!

Good on ya, many happy returns -- and I think there's maybe more of a
gloat (or even neener, if you prefer) here than you think.

(Good friends/neighbors and all ...)
