Utah Symposium wrap up
Utah, closeout
Went to a session by Cindy Drozda on Finial design (big surprise eh, Cindy talking about Finials) , then one from Kurt Thoebald on segmented design and one from Stuart Batty on thin goblet design. Learned several good points from both Cindy and Stuart, I have Curt’s DVDs, so much of his session was a repeat Then was the closing bit. Mike Mahoney talked about the money they raised at Friday’s auction to continue funding a program to help High School shop teachers learn more about turning. They also raised enough money to ensure that every High School student attending the event would go home with their own mini-Lathe and tools. He also gave away a number of items the presenters had made during the Symposium, followed by a large number of donated items, like gift certificates, tools, etc. I didn’t win any of them, sigh… The final item was the PM-3520 lathe raffle, which was won by a nice ol’guy I had met earlier. Only problem was, three guys had come together in a car, and they had no room for a monster lathe. So he was going to have to arrange for shipping. But bad though, with shipping the $2500 lathe was going to cost him less then $300. A few funny stores that I have forgotten to relate before Kurt Hertzog running around the show room floor, looking for a pen to write something down (Kurt does mostly turned pens) Stuart Batty talking about the difference between US and UK Turners, noting that UK Turners all have better techniques, but most have no sense of design, while US turners have design drilled into them from day one, but are always looking for the quick and easy way to turn something |
