Default Spindle Gouges

What is the difference between a spindle gouge and a detail gouge
other than the grind? Are the flutes the same depth? Can one be
ground into the other? I have used bowl gouges for years but have not
done much spindle work.

Thanks,
Ted

The marketing literature.

Oh, and what you use it for. Are you using it for spindles, or details?

[yeah, no difference - they're just different names for shallow
gouges]

Generally the detail gouge has a much more shallow flute. I have one or
each and sharpen them with a fingernail grind. The spindle gouges are
not quite as rigid as the detail gouge. Grinding will not change the
difference between the two tools.

So get some of these and peel your way to happiness with uniform thickness
and longer bevels.

They also work fine on bowls, BTW.

The difference between these and what some call spindle gouges is dramatic.
The others you mentioned are just attempts to make cylindrical gouges into
what these are by their nature.

Ted here's a link to the P&N gouges, just click on the "view" sign and
it shows you the profile of all their gouges.
I have the bowl, spindle and detail gouges and a couple more from P&N,
and no they are not the same, doesn't mean you couldn't use either one
to do the job, but you certainly would notice the difference.
Some like to use a spindle gouge as a bowl gouge, seems to work also.
Have fun and take care

Ted,

Check out www.thompsonlathetools.com Doug Thompson was a good
example of the different spindle gouges------ from regular detail
gouges to normal spindle gouges to detail spindle gouges. I am not
involve with Thompson Lathe Tools just a satisfied Customer.
