I think it's a good value. A battery charger is included, but it's not
a very sophisticated one (read slow) like you would find with a drill,
for example.

There's an active thread (well, it's settled down now) on WoodCentral
(http://www.woodcentral.com/cgi-bin/t...es;read=127347)
concerning home building inexpensive battery packs for it. That would
give you the option of putting in a second battery pack to extend the
working time. Also, a universal smart charger for the homebrew battery
packs would speed the charge up by an order of magnitude.

I've not done anything with the filter yet, so I can't comment on it,
but it doesn't seem like something that couldn't be homebrewed.

There are many things I like about it, I do own one. Some claim it
doesn't meet any standards. Except it does (several British ones), but
the firm has never had it certified to US or ISO standards. The British
standards state it is certified for use in a commercial dust collection
room (I once did the research). You should be aware that the filter only
filters to 20 microns.

if your wallet can afford it, consider someting like the 3-M airmate - the
hard hat comes in very handy when you have a "separation event", and the
HEPA filter is quite good. Not cheap, but much cheaper than lung
replacement surgery

Excellent, the battery life has always been the worse part of owning a
trend, I nearly bought one of the respirators with a clip on belt
battery pack but the trend was cheaper.

I see that the author states that the home made battery pack fits
better as well.

for anyone in the UK maplin stock the 3 battery holder
http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?...0400&doy=20m10 at 49p,
note that the pack has a pp3 type fitting on which could be the weak
point so I would hard solder a lead on, could all be done for just over
£1. Next time I'm in maplin will pick up a couple of these.

The main complaints I've heard about the trend is the weight and the
noise. All the weight of the unit is on your head. there is also the
triton.

I just picked up a helmet respirator with a fanny pack to run it - It's a
Racal Airstream AS905, it uses 4.5V nicad, and uses two MSHA-NIOSH approved
filters. The battery and fan mount to your belt and go in back, a flexible
hose connects to the helmet with it's integral face shield. I've tested it
and it runs and is reasonably quiet - you could power it with a wall wart, I
suppose - I don't have the battery pack - this is a pretty expensive unit
that has been sitting in a friend's garage for a long time, he asked me to
sell it - it's on topic for this discussion as an example of a nice powered
respirator -

If you are interested, contact me off the list - get my email address off my
web page, www.wbnoble.com - I can e-bay it, but I think it would be best to
get it to someone who needs it via this NG

bill

I own one and like it very much. with the 2 batteries I get 8 hours
easy before recharging. I have also taken an inexpensive power adapter,
set it for 4.5 volts and plug it directly into the helmet when I am at
the shop so that I don't have to use the batteries if I don't want to.
The only "noise" is that of air flowing in front of your face while
using it. I wear glasses and never have a problem with fogging up.

The parts, filters and tear-aways are expensive. I found a work-around
for the tear-aways using clear acetate sheets available at Staples for
a $1 a piece and 2 sided tape. I had to ask for the acetate sheets as
they do not have them on the shelves. They keep them behind the copy
counter for some reason. I also use 3 pre-filters made up of household
forced air vent filters to minimize the need to replace the expensive
inner filter. One look at the filters at the end of the day tells you
how well they work!

If you have serious allergies or special breathing requirements, it is
true that this may not be for you. There is a gap at the top that will
let dust through but a hood can easily be fashioned to eliminate this
and make it similar to the Triton's head piece which is basically a
hard hat with a nylon hood.

Overall, I am very satisfied with the Trend.
