Default which oil to use in record cl3

so far i've been using wd40 but today i went to look for the oil
recommended by record(motor oil grade w30) but couldnt find it after
looking for a while. all they had at the gas station was w20 grade for
diesel and reg gas motors. whats the difference between the two and can
i use w20 grade.
thanks

Hello Bezalel,

The 20 weight oil should work, it is just a bit thiner than 30 weight. You may
have more oil coming out around the bearing with the 20 weight oil. I would
think that the 40 weight that you've been using should work fine.

Hello Fred and Bezalel.
The WD40 is not the right lubricant for the CL3 lathe. You want the 20 or
the 30 weight oil. The WD 40 is that solvent based product in a spray can
that is too light and not sticky enough to lubricate bronze bearings.

If you've been using WD40, you're lucky you still have bearings.
http://www.wd40.co.uk/index.cfm?articleid=1519 Its lubricity is minimal.

20W20 or 30W30 NON-Detergent oil is what people normally use for sintered
bearings.

Since almost all current motor oils are detergent oils, Universal Tractor
Fluid or 2-Cycle oils are often substituted.

I wouldn't use either WD40 oe SAE 30 engine oil. Neither is of the same consistency or composition as the Record oil. I wouldn't use the latter either but only because I am a tight-fisted Yorkshireman. I am reliably informed that the Record oil which they sell at some exhorbitant price is nothing other than automotive oil as used in automatic gearboxes and power steering systems. Certainly I used this for years in my CL3 and the bearings were fine.

I have been using a CL3 for years now with 30 grade oil. 20 tends to
run out of the bearing too quickly, and as Fred states IF (A big if)
you have been using WD40 you are extremely fortunate in having bearings
at all, if this is the case please dismantle the whole thing, clean and
reassemble using 30 oil. Regards Peter

Hi.

I have only ever used the oil from Record, yes it is overpriced, but
why risk it. I use the CL4

Regards
