Has anyone in this group reversed the direction of the motor on a 1" x 24"

No, but I have seen belt sanders mounted up-side-down as the easy
mechanical fix to an electrical problem that (depending on the motor)
may be difficult.

Is there a removable plate with directions on the inside?

Is there any reason you can't just get a slightly longer belt and
figure-8 it?
