Hello, I'm just in process of renovating our kitchen, long time since
I've had to do any DIY, so turning to the experts...

I've gone with the Black Granite Work Top from B&Q and also bought the
70mm upstand to finish things off.

How do I go about fixing this to WorkTop & freshly tiled walls? Should
I use glue, if so what type, or is it a job purely for a silicon seal
and again if so any particular type. Where should it be applied etc.

I'm concious that this is going to have a significant effect on the
overall finish/appearance so want to get it right.

Also am I best with butt joints in the inner corners or should I
mitre?

Are you saying that you have tiled the walls down to the worktop and
you want to stick the upstand on top? If so, that is not going to
look right. The upstand should go on first and you should tile to
it.

For adhesive, Gripfill should be suitable.

I'm afraid so, (hangs head in shame :-) got to say as a conscious
thing mainly because the room is a fraction wide for the layout and
anything to fill the gap a bit was going to help. We are retaining the
existing units and sink, just fresh tiling, wall & floors new work
tops and a LOT of "Flash with Bleach"!

OK. Are the tiles glazed? If so, then rather than using Gripfill,
dabs of silicone sealer are probably going to be more appropriate.

Then you will need to run a fillet of it along the top where the
upstand meets the wall to prevent water etc. from goinf down the back.
You could use the clear stuff if you want to retain the illusion of
the black against the tiles.

I had a granite top fitted by a specialist firm in Spain and they used clear
silicone, they did not mitre corners and the job looks fine. It's only 6
Months ago so I don't know how long it will last, however they are used to
doing granite tops in Spain as it's very cheap there.

I don't think that B&Q sells real granite - I think the OP means their
laminate worktop with granite appearance.

For real granite, using silicone is the way because it allows for a
small amount of movement of cupboards and building without stressing
the granite.
