![]() "Ian Jackson" wrote in message ... In message , Fredxx writes There are two types of Brexiter. One that has existed from the 1970s who has always hated the idea of EU control over the UK and have always been a minority. And those more recent converts, who have seen salaries dwindle, increased demand for housing and an lack of investment in infrastructure, despite being repeatedly told the economy is doing well. I actually agree with you entirely. Actually, these people are well-represented by the callers to LBC. There is the 'batty old lady' variety (of both sexes) who never really did like Johnny Foreigner all that much, (even though some might actually own a second home in France or Spain). Many of the 'recent converts' justifiably feel deprived and disadvantaged by the things you mention (and much more). Unfortunately, they rarely seem to work out WHY things are like they are, and have simply swallowed the simplistic "It's all the EU's fault" propaganda. But while the EU rules certainly restrict things like government subsidies for failing and uncompetitive industries, and nationalisation, one of the main reasons for such deprivation has simply been successive governments' policies of economies, cut-backs, austerity, tax reduction (especially since 2010) and general ineptitude - most of which has been little or nothing to do with the EU. It must be particularly galling to be told repeatedly that the economy is booming, unemployment is at an all-time low, and essentially "We've never had it so good" - when you know it's mainly a load of lies (at least as far as you're concerned). So which particular groups do you claim that is true for ? I guess you could claim its true for those in industrial ghost towns with those that refuse to leave those industrial ghost towns but its hard to see that there are enough of those to matter country wide. But as I've said many times before, how is leaving the EU really going to improve matters? By allowing the UK to be selective about which EU citizens it chooses to allow to move to the UK because they are useful to the UK economy. And by allowing the UK to decide what policy makes sense with stuff like nationalisation and state subsidies and those sorts of important policy issues instead of having to do what some unelected bureaucrat in the EU has decided is the way it must be done. So the party that has made that policy choice with stuff like nationalisation can be given the bums rush at the next general election instead of being stuck with it like is the current situation with EU policy. If you can forget this so easily, I would suggest a visit to the doctors and tests for dementia. |
