can cold and high humidity affect soft off/on switching in a transceiver
that wouldn't affect a hard off/on switch? .... -- Resisting Freemasonry for 39 years ..... Fat Masons need love ... |

In more extreme temp., starting from cold can be a problem- even with a 'hard' switch. I've not seen it in amateur kit and it is generally at very low temperatures- well below 0 C. I'd hope the front panel is at least reasonable protected re moisture. Moisture inside could be another matter. Soft start circuits are design to drawn naff all current when 'off' and a bit of moisture could really cause issues- lower Z where higher Z is expected. -- Suspect someone is claiming a benefit under false pretences? What exactly do you mean? Old transceivers with valves have capacitors in
them that need to be formed, and slowly bringing up the volts can do this kindly, but sometimes they do still go bang and spread their contents of silber bits and muck all over the innards. I have an old valve amp and got away with powering that up after a few years of cold with little issues though there is a slight hum, and an occasional rustle but I feel this is not from the electrolytic. More likely a dry joint, capacitor of the small type or a dodgy resistor. Brian -- ----- - This newsgroup posting comes to you directly from... The Sofa of Brian Gaff... Such things are a feature of more modern kit. The dry joint etc you list are certainly possibilities. As is a cracked PCB. |
