Default Planning application - side elevation

Next door have submitted a planning application for a large two-storey
extension. However the architect's plans on the council website only
show the side elevation from the left-hand side which is not affected at
all, so only the new bits that stick out beyond the existing house are
shown.

Is this a "convention" or are they trying to hide something that isn't
obvious from the plan view? Not being architects we can't really
visualise what's going to affect us from the plan view.

Surely the side elevation should be from the side that's being build on?

Plans submitted vary from fag-packet to selected elevations, to all
elevations to computer renderings, depends if it's an outline or
detailed application.

I'd request that they submit at least the opposite elevation from the
one they have done, depends on how good terms you are with them whether
you approach them direct, or put your concerns about being unable to
assess the application to the council and see if they will request it.
