I have in the past just used screw-on F-connectors but I would like to
try crimping. I have a reel of what I thought was CT100 cable but
wikipedia suggests that CT100 was a brand and says that it is no
longer made because the manufacturer closed down.

I have been looking at cheap crimp tools and they claim to work with
rg59, rg6, etc. What is the rg-equivalent or nearest equivalent of
ct100? Is it just a matter of finding the one with the same or nearest
outside diameter?

PF100 or WF100 - its the 100 that matters.

You will need the specialist cripming tool of which you can get one
type (Rolson branded) from Maplin. However it will not do the heavier
duty type that Screwfix sell under part number 55114.

Be prepared - crimping tools are expensive. Consider instead using
compression fittings which are just as good (maybe better) and the
tool is cheaper.
