Clueless about Flueless
Hi Folks
I would like some advice on *Fluless gas fires. Have read the brochure correctly that they can go almost anywhere that you want to put them in the brochure it shows one in front of a glass door (B&Q "The Fire place" page 32 Lascar Flueless stove). The flueless gas fire would be ideal for me as there is no chimney just a flat wall and I wouldn't want to have a chimney built specially for a normal gas fire. I have only the one outside wall and suppose I could have a balanced flue but that would mean that the *nice little youngsters in this area would enjoy stuffing the flue with garbage as they have done with our cooker hood outlet. So is there anything that I should know without me getting a survey (£40) done by B&Q but the £40 would be returnable if we got the fire from them. To be truthful I don't want someone coming along who could be one of the cowboy outfits in the area, who as I have been told are next to useless. The position I would want it is only about 2 feet from the main gas supply to the property. Tia Peace xxx Ammer Chewer |

Flueless gas fires pump out water at a massive rate, causing mould and condensation. They require enormous ventilation, making them particularly inefficient due to all the cold air you need to allow into the house. I would strongly recommend not installing one. Christian. |

They are fairly expensive, can only be fitted in quite large rooms. And given that they are enclosed they are more like a wood burning stove than a 'real' fire. -- Ed Sirett - Property maintainer and registered gas fitter. B&Q employ local contractors to do the work and, if our experience with a B&Q fireplace is anything to go by, you have a good chance of it being one of local cowboys that turn up. Phil |

You have to bear in mind that B&Q usually sell cheap and that goes for the installation service too. They employ anyone who wants the job and don't pay a lot of money either. So, you'll probably end up with a rough job. Better to go to a proper specialist fire company. Look out for one who has a nice neat shop without all the fancy stuff that you will end up paying for. I had a power flue fitted recently by a local shop and the job was superb. |

Phil Yes Phil you are spot on as my sister- in- law would confirm having to eventually call in a real professional. i recently heard of a job whereby a punter bought a new fire and surround from B & Q and were quoted £500 to fit it!!! Yeah I noticed some of the estimated prices for installation in the booklet. I had no intention of using the B&Q offer of installation nor have I any intention of buying from them either cos their prices are much higher from places on the net. Thank you for the reply Peace xxx Ammer Chewer |
