Just found a vacant newsgroup that might suit a lot of us who post OT
subjects in uk legal and the D-I-Y group.
Shall we jump ship and use this group to save the annoyance of posters
who don't like our posts?
The subjects could be wide open, so no one can complain about OT posts.
Any presently open subjects could be transferred.

Worth a try?

Anyone for it?

I'm afraid I have been hitting the 'K' key on an awful lot of threads
lately, and should resist the temptation to post to other "OT:" threads,
I suspect it may be a bit futile, but worth a try ...

Anyone who opens a post marked OT and then moans about it being OT is a
****ing idiot, and there's no shortage of those on usenet as in real life.

Just keep things as they are, the majority of people read the OT posts and
wouldn't sub to a new group with a 'lucky dip' feel to it, those who don't
like them can subscribe to alt.****off.and.die, if they can drag their
knuckles off the floor long enough.

Aye, it's always the same guys who seem to moan about OT posts. The rest
either open or avoid the posts without a whimper.
As I said earlier, the D-I-Y and uk legal groups are vibrant and very
popular, as opposed to many other groups are either dying out or have
stopped altogether. I personally like it as it is.
It was (as I said), just a thought.

Problem is quite a few alt groups seem to be banished on some servers, or is
it just they are not propagated as much thesedays.

I like the idea, but. There is always a but. To be honest, I think the
OT posts would continue anyway, and I quite like some of the OT stuff.
Bit like standing in a pub with a group of blokes (and girls!) really.
Although this group (uk.d-i-y) tolerates OT posts and stretches the
definition of DIY at times, I think it does amazingly well to continue
pretty well on topic, as it has done for years. There are not that many
Usenet groups worth subscribing to, now.

There's nothing wrong with off-topic posts but as a courtesy they should
be marked OT. Flooding a group with off-topic posts without making much
in the way of on-topic content is also discourteous IMO but on the other
hand off-topic discussion can also help to keep a group alive.

What isn't okay is when people post test messages to a non-test
newsgroup. I also think it makes the guilty parties look very foolish.

I don't know how to attract more women into the group. I've tried
looking at groups specifically for women, but none seem suitable,
so it's not worth asking them to join, unless you have any ideas.

We've had a few female subject matter experts here that I can recall.
KKKatie - there was nothing she didn't know about sewers and related regs.
I forget her name, but there was a lime plaster expert here too, who did
elaborate restorations and new work.
Also, another one (name forgotten) expert on bee keeping.

Sadly, haven't seen these for a while now.

Attitudes. I don't care about that in political groups because I have
interest in that, but here? I don't know.

That is very cheering to hear, Graeme, thank you Mickey taking? I laugh
;-) Discrimination? Shrug ... but constant bitching? That is another matter
although I have to say, the really annoying ones go into my kf anyway.
Thing is, in a new group one doesn't know anyone and if enough won't respond
to anything posted ... You do realise I am referring to the new group they
are resurrecting? I have been invited so I am thinking about it.

I just realised I am probably responding to you via uk.d-i-y

In uk.legal, I have seen Ophelia's gender being used against her.

You are right of course, but it is by the usual cabal so is not important

Just found a vacant newsgroup that might suit a lot of us who post
OT
subjects in uk legal and the D-I-Y group.
Shall we jump ship and use this group to save the annoyance of
posters
who don't like our posts?
The subjects could be wide open, so no one can complain about OT
posts.
Any presently open subjects could be transferred.

Worth a try?

Anyone for it?

Dunno. I went into one like that ages ago and it was boring.

Ok

I don't know how to attract more women into the group. I've tried looking
at groups specifically for women, but none seem suitable,
so it's not worth asking them to join, unless you have any ideas.

Me?? I have told you what I have seen in women's groups. Sorry Bod old
chap, but you are on your own with this one)) Good luck though

Err maybe 'Judith' can help ... He likes to play the female, so who
knows)

It might help if you have defined a subject for discussion. Just chit chat
about nothing in particular can soon pall.
