A Tory MP who has opposed taxpayer subsidies for green energy has been
accused of hypocrisy after winning planning permission to build a
"hideous" solar farm the size of 110 football pitches on his country
estate.

Richard Drax ignored the wishes of hundreds of residents by ploughing
ahead with the controversial plans to build the third biggest solar farm
in Britain on land which once inspired Thomas Hardy.

It is believed it will receive nearly £2 million a year in the same
government subsidies he campaigned against. The MP for South Dorset has
been accused of hypocrisy and presiding over the ?industrialisation of
the countryside?.

Umm, surely it was the planning committee that "ignored the wishes.

Sounds like he's merely illustrating his point.

Yeah, you'd never get a Labour or Libdem MP engaging in such behaviour;
they're scrupulously honest and beyond reproach.

They're unlikely to have 170 odd acres of farmland going spare - they
don't need duckhouses either.

Well, not even. The Planning Committee takes no notice at all of any
response to an application that consists of anything along the lines of
"I don't like it or want it". There has to be a *planning* *reason* to
reject an application. It'll just get turned over on appeal otherwise.

There y'go, then.

"Hundreds of people had a pointless whine" doesn't make the same kind of
headlines for the Daily Wail, does it?

How in the name of all that's sacred to badgers is the fact that the land
once inspired Thomas Hardy relevant? Does that make developing it worse
than developing land that only inspired a lesser author?

In fact, having read Hardy, I would be in favour of concreting over any
land that inspired him, in case it inspired someone else to churn out
tedious anti-insomniac bathroom shelf fodder.

On a side note, what is the solar farm going to be called? Drax 2?

I suspect you don't realise just how rich many Labour MPs are. Margaret
Hodge being a very good example.

Tony Benn was the one who came to my mind first.
