I subscribe to a number of newgroups, ranging from IT related to health and of
course this one.

I have to say that the uk.d-i-y one is by FAR the best.

Brilliant exchange of ideas and genuinely good advice.

A thank you to everyone over the years who has contributed and helped me.

I feel the same, although I am not subscribed to any others but I find
it a lot better than some of the forums I browse/post to.

Have to agree it's a good usenet group ... been here since 1995 ...
when you had to use trn or similar to access.

The amount of off topic cross-posting seems to have reduced, (mainly
selling trainers/Rolex/Viagra or some Religious fanaticism) it got so
bad a while back I avoided using group for over a year.

That's because you never bothered to learn how to filter out such garbage,
it takes less than 5 minutes and you'll never see another ad for trainers
again.

How do you filter such garbage in less than 5 minutes? (Just asking
for OP) :-)

I pay someone the remarkably reasonable sum of EUR 10 a year to do it
for me.

trainers? Rolex? Viagra? Religious fanaticism? I don't see any of it.

I wonder how much spam there is on Usenet these days.

Still quite a bit in some groups.

Is it worth the spammers while any more given the withering away of text
Usenet,

Since it costs them nothing to spam, presumably.

the reduction in the number of servers, most of whom are
commercial and operate a vigorous anti-spam policy?

Plenty don’t.

I regard changing newsreaders with the same joy as changing text editors

I agree. If I'd had the time to port ProNews to BSD, I'd have done it.

I looked into porting xvnews onto Linux. For about 30 seconds.

To people who know nothing, anything is possible.
To people who know too much, it is a sad fact
that they know how little is really possible -
and how hard it is to achieve it.

Heh. I'm still using trn (one day I'll move on if I really have to :-))
