Default dishwasher crusting knives

After posting here about the stainless knives in our cutlery set getting
crusted up, I now need to know how to polish them up to match the shine
of the rest of the set. They are looking dull and overcast at the moment.

If they have actually gone brown, as stainless tends to do when overheated,
you will need a fairly abrasive polish, otherwise, there are plenty of metal
polishes in your local store. If you want to restore the original mirror
finish you will probably need a buffing wheel and the appropriate lapping
compound.

What is a crusting knife: sounds like it could come in handy in the
kitchen?

I have a wonderfully shiny stainless cutlery set. A spoon seemed a bit
tarnished so I polished it. It looks like the spoon was chromeplated,
so it will never be shiny again. So try polishing one piece of cutlery
before you do the whole lot.

That is what I was expecting. Never having buffed any steel since I was
at school, I am out of touch with any of the modern polishing techniques.

I didn't know you could chrome plate stainless steel.

No, it has not been overheated and gone brown, but is suffering from
crusting and dulling from the dishwasher chemicals.

Isn't it something to do with washing a silver plated item with stainless
steel. It sets up some sort of reaction / electrolytic effect? (If I recall
correctly)
