Elcometer. Anyone involved in serious painting on structural steelwork
does indeed carry one around for just this purpose

Live and learn. And by goodness, can we learn from posters here! (At
least the uk.d-i-y NG - no idea about the other one!)

Default how to seal a "slamfärg"-painted house (forover-painting with latex)?

Thu, 4 Dec 2008 10:12:51 -0800 (PST), John Nagelson ba:

I have just bought a small cottage in northern Sweden. At the moment
the exterior wood is painted with "slamfärg", the red paint which
leaves a red powder on your hand if you rub it.

I would like to paint the house with latex paint. Various people have
told me that you shouldn't paint this directly onto slamfärg.

What is your objective? Do you want to keep the humidity in the
wall as high as possible so that it rots as fast as possible?

In my neighbourhood on Stockholm, several hundred new houses were
painted with latex paint in the mid-70's. Less than ten years
later, it was time for replacing the exterior eooden panel. If
this is your wish, then by all means go ahead and destroy your house.

Default how to seal a "slamfärg"-painted house (forover-painting with latex)?

Fri, 5 Dec 2008 02:18:34 -0800 (PST), John Nagelson ba:

A lot of houses in northern Sweden built since the 1990s are painted
with latex paint nowadays, which is much longer-lasting (lasts about
15 years) than slamfarg, which tends to go patchy and needs redoing
every few years.

Depending on how sensitive you are, you may of coure repaint your house
with Falu Rödfärg more often than ef´really necessary, and regardless
whether you do it or not, you can expect the painted wood to last more
than 150 years.

I'm not wholly sure whether latex paint stops 100% of
the vapour. Certainly, relative humidity can be very high by UK
standards.

It is not the outdoors hunidity which is the problem, it is the
indoors humidity that wanders towards the cold outside. If you
place a vapour stopper outside the condensation point in the wall,
you are asking for trouble. Latex paint acts as a more or less
perfect such stopper.
