Default Painting "This Old House" ... a bunch of Questions????

Hello,
Wow I live out here in Seattle Washington... it rains here more than a
lot... it doesn't stop... we can count on this Memorial Day again with rain,
as I infact sit here right now typing this up!

The house that I have owned for over 7 years now really needs a good paint
job. I see in the basement some cans of Sherwin Williams SUPERPAINT series.
I checked the local Sherwin Willaims and they want $28.99 for there Latex
Flat Paint. That is infact on sale thru this Monday... regular price being
$38.00! Damn that sounds pricey??? They state that it has some 20 year
limited Warranty... Any opinions here?

I called Parker Paints there Flat is going for $20.99 On SALE thru July
with this price... regular being $25.00. They claim there's has a mildecide
in it... I'm sure Sherwin Williams also does... forgot to ask. The gal at
Parker Paint also stated that, though they don't have a "warranty on there
can", it will hold up for 15 years if house is prep'd properly. She also
stated that there paint is made right here in Tacoma, Washington., which is,
"just down the road from ya all." That they make there paint taking into
consideration my WET climate! C'mon... sounds like a "load from my TRUNK"
rolled out! Any opinions here?

Lastly, What about paints in general... ya got Home Depot... and there
mirage of paints... ie Behr etc..
Ya got Sears... Heck... I don't even know what to expect from that... some
of the guys at my work say there just as GOOD as any!!!

I'd appreciate any advice on paint selection...

Have a good Memorial Day...

Thanks
Dan

Default Painting "This Old House" ... a bunch of Questions????

Dan Here Again...

Here's my update... I called SEARS... They got this Exterior Weatherbeat
ULTRA has a Lifetime Gaurantee...Huh?
I guess ya got to do all this prep stuff to... OKAY... Howl at the moon and
all!
There sale price was $20.99 for the Flat and $23.09 for the Satin... good
thru the 31st at my Store here in Washington.
A 30 PERCENT savings they say... regular being $29 for Flat and $32 for
Satin.
What do ya think?

Here's another claim to fame the guy told me over the phone...
This Ext Weatherbeat ULTRA uses this "SUPERBOND" formula that contains
Polyerethane, that acts as an adhesive promoting durability... that this
formula is designed to "stick" to DIRTY, GLOSSY and CHALKY SURFACES. He
even stated that you didn't have to necessarily even PRIME...WHAT? That
can't be right! I guess it's pretty thick paint...

A BIG.........HMM HMMM is in order...

My house being old... maybe this this is the right way to go...??? Any
opinions????

He said other paints don't have this polyereythane... they have acrylic...
This Sears stuff also has it... but the Polyerethane with the acrylic makes
it that much more of a bond??

IS THIS MAKING ANY SENSE!

Here's a flash, Dan.

Both Parker Paint and Miller Paint are mfgd. in the PNW an both have
mildicides in the formula.

With the national brands, the mildicides are an add in that you'll pay extra
for when they are shaken / mixed at the paint store.

I wouldn't use anthing but the top of the line Miller, and wpuld not use a
national brand here in PDX,

Prep is a big part of any exterior job, and is the same whether you use the
b ational brand or the regional brand.

How much of that premium price on the national brand is diesel fuel used to
haul the product to the upper left hand corner fom the factory in the Mid
west? That disel fuel isn't going to protect your house.

Your mileage may vary. (VBG)

I've owned this house 30 years. I've painted it 4 times. First two with
Benj. More stuff. Got 5 years from each.

Second two times, with Miller. Got 10 years each.

Just plain empirical evidence and experience with this house over 30 years.

The Miller wins hands down.
