Default Cheap *******

Ugh.

Its totally my fault. A while ago I was a cheap *******, and today I
paid the price. Ever tried drilling through cement mortar with one of
those crap 33p looooooong drill bits? Nope, it doesnt want to know, the
metal isnt very hard. Didnt take long to end up with a round pointed
rod, no cutting head left. Less than one hole in fact.

Next time I will pay the £17 for one single drill bit rather than
resharpen the bit over half a dozen times just to drill one hole - and
still not be able to get through the cement bit.

Going through brick was slow and heavy going, but come the cement and
the party was over. I'd say that 2' bit was worth about.... 33p. Boy it
was nice using the sds in comparison, I drilled the first sds hole
before even noticing I had it on rotostop!

I guess some things ya can cheapskate, some ya cant, some are about as
good, and some utter carp. The trick is knowing which is which.

Indeed so.
Also some tools are transformed by using a decent blade e.g. circular saws.

I was hoping that we might have been able to skate around that one.

Unfortunately it seems to be our sole source of humour

Yes, cod we plaice talk less about this. This whole thread's starting
to get fishy.

Due to the carp quality of the drill bit I had to use a lot of mussel.
I could have done with some help from Halle, but she's away. I think
I'll tro-out those bits later.

Funny. I bought a packet of 3 450mm bits in the market for 99p (same
price as yours). I never expected them to last more than one hole,
but some 5+ years and very many holes later, they're all as good as
new. Actually, they are probably one of my best ever buys.

meow2222 - possibly excessive feed rate leading to the drill tip being
torn off.

It wore down rather than ripping off. It wore down till there was no
trace of it left. I finished the hole by cutting a new cutting head on
it... several times over. Being soft that took seconds each time.

NT, are you saying this (masonry) bit wasn't TCT? Perhaps it wasn't
a masonry bit at all!
