New door
I would like to fit a new double glazed door after first removing the
old wooden door and frame. There are great savings to be made by not having a double glazing company fit it for me. Is it within the scope of a comptent diyer? Are there any websites or books that can help me with this project? Any tips? Many pitfalls? |

Don't know about web sites, but I am sure there are plenty of other folks here who have installed doors.... Pitfalls: make sure the opening has an adequate lintel over before you remove the frame. Fitting is usually a case of fixing the frame (using a few frame fixings oddly ;-) then making good the interior and exterior reveals, and finally applying some frame sealant round the edges. -- Cheers, John. /================================================== ===============\ | Internode Ltd - http://www.internode.co.uk | |-----------------------------------------------------------------| | John Rumm - john(at)internode(dot)co(dot)uk | \================================================= ================/ |

Make sure you get the right size, I go for 5mm smaller then the hole Make sure you have a lintel When fitting fix in with Frame fixings Use packers to make sure you do not bend the door with the fixings, put the packers round the fixings between theframe and the brick Make sure its still a rectangle - measure the diaganols Fill gap arround frame with spray foam Cut sprayfoam flush and make good. Rick And also make absolutely sure the frame is plumb before and after you fix it, using an accurate spirit level. There's not many things more annoying than a door that swings open or closed on its own. |
