ITYF that commercial ads are not allowed, and I'm the first to jump on
anyone who does so.

I think this comes under the heading of a private person selling a
couple items, it does say condition "used"

IMNVHO, this is acceptable

I dunno - this poster only ever seems to post for sale ads - nothing
else. Just because he's selling a pile of second-hand tat doesn't mean
it's not a commercial operation.

Ebay is commercial. 'Free to collector' or something for the
cost of a pint seem fine whilst their volume is very low,
but this newsgroup has no business being an Ebay advertising
forum, which would completely kill it. Likewise any other
auction forum.

Actually, I would like to see this in the FAQ.

I stand corrected, as I wasn't aware that he makes a regular practice of
it

I did check his history first mate, half a dozen ads in the last month to
groups with no ads charters, mind you the adspeak subject line is a bit of
a give away . . .

Oh great - now what happens if _everyone_ does it ?

If you want to search eBay, they have a perfectly good search mechanism.

As a matter of interest, since this group is un moderated, what action could
be taken against someone who contravened the principles in the FAQ?

It has a charter, as do all ngs

Hi Geoff

It has a charter, as do all ngs

I own/moderate several Yahoo Groups and if someone breaks the rules I can
remove them or moderate every post they make.

It may have a charter, but what about teeth?

Dave

Haven't tried recently, but Ebay themselves certainly
used to be very good about this, and would kill any
such auctions if they received a complaint. (I don't
know if there was any additional penalty they applied
to the seller.)

If it's someone who is being a real arse, I'll make an abuse report to their
NSP and ISP. I've seen a couple of ids disappear after such a complaint so
it seems to work some of the time, depends who the service providers are
though but a succinct, polite complaint with message ids is usually met
with a helpful response. If it's commercial abuse of an affiliate link I'd fire
one off to the affiliate organisation too. The provider will usually want a link
to the charter of the group so they can confirm a post is abusive. In your
case maybe publish an AUP that you can refer to in any complaint you
make.

A FAQ is just a FAQ, it's of no other interest.

Not all groups have "charters".

It does, but the parish council won't admit it. They'd much rather that
whole non-conformant "uk.d-i-y" name went away and died.

Personally I don't object to such a small post given it's selling
something that could be of interest to many on here.

But it should have a 'FS' prefix so those who wish to filter such things
can do so.
