We installed our first lot in our first house about 7 - 8 years ago, when it was still a pretty new thing. We loved having a nice wipe-clean surface all over the floor, with no gaps in it. Back then, Pergo was the only decent make around. We've only done one room in laminate in this house, and that's the TV room/library. We like it lots. It's nice. ;-) It is also very good for doing the tango on. Don't you find that your stillettos dig in? I don't throw knives at the floor. ...or have snakes. |

"Grunff" wrote in message ... It beggars belief that people will spend half a year's wages on a tin box that depreciates from day one and skimp on the trimmings in their much much more valuable asset that they live in. I couldn't agree more, and can assure you that this is one thing I'm not guilty of. We've spent approximately 200x on the house so far than we have on both our cars! So the car is worth less than the tools in it ? BTW, have you killed your PPP hammer drill yet ? |

Personally, I'd prefer a quality coloured suite - provided it's not avocado, pink or dark blue, to a cheap new white deal from B&Q that bends wherever you touch it. We both hate white suites. Last house had champagne which was a standard colour from everybody but now appears to be an obsolete colour. Instead pergamon or similar is offered by some manufacturers. But each company's version is different and as we want an Airbath and they don't make toilets we've had to choose those on the best match we can get, not the style we would like. |

Curiously, the UK seems to be about the only country in Europe that does it. Spain and Russia spring to mind, albeit based on hotels, not homes. In any case a good waterproofed carpet is not going to retain water no matter how damp the bathroom. And if you are getting that much moisture on the floor perhaps preventing the cause might be a good move. I've been to numerous hotels in Spain and none had carpet in the bathroom - more typically stone of some kind. These were good business hotels.... Carlton in Madrid. Surprised me as most hotels are tiled of course. Also remembered there was one in Verona, 5* one down the road from Juliet's balcony. Carpet was a deep claret. And of course guess who discovered that Italian baths don't always have overflows after a long phone call. Every towel went back to housekeeping with a pink tinge. |

Obviously people who dont know much about cats - or have odd cats! Cats generally do not like mud. They prefer nice dry condiditons. Mud takes a lot of licking off when you clean yourself!. Kids and dogs on the other hand just love rolling in mud , in my experience. Having said that, Carpets are my personal preference. I hate wood floors and laminates. They look cheap and they are dangerous ( try walking through with wet schoes on or socks ..... and falling flat on your wherewithall. It aint funny) |

(I got £50 for it, too!) Both replaced with white. If you want a coloured bathroom, paint the walls! Here's my prediction. In five years time, people will be ripping out white bathroom ware because the fashion pundits, lefties and fairies say that it is too cold and sterile. How long have you had your avocado suite? I didn't say that I had an opinion one way or the other - it was just an observation. Before coloured suites became popular, white was all there was. Like any other fashion, I am sure that it will go full circle - sort of like Mandy being in and out of office. I dont think white has even been in or out of "fashion". Its always been there. Clever people use white because of that and change the wallpaper and flooring and maybe the bath panel. White actually allows you to change the colour of your bathroom. I have an avacado suite - I got it with my house. Its perfectly serviceable and thats why its kept ( I also have a partner who says if it aint broke you dont change it as its a waste of money!). However, I hate the colour. It always looks dirty and murky no matter how many times you clean down the loo. You cant see clean water - only dark green. If there is anything in there, you cant see it. Neither can you see scum in the basin very well! The bath now has manky marks /stains ( like baths get with age ). Again they make it look dirty. Its a bugger to clean. ( but it will also be a b to take out because its cast iron) You are limited to what colour you can paint/decorate the bathroom. Some colours simply do not "go" with avacado. You have to use a lot of white because the bathroom suite is so dark. The only choice in colour is either lemon, peach or white to go - and that includes towels. Everything else clashed cronically! I would love to get rid of it and put in white! But the other half says no simply because there is nothing wrong with the existing sanitary ware. Coloured bathroom suites are yuk! |

It's a question of whether buyers can see past that or not. That is the thing. Emotional percepton is what dictates the price. A young yuppie couple want to see bright clean post modern cubist tendencies everywhere. And off street parking. Families with kids will look at te size of the toy cupboards. Older experienced buyers with capital and no income will inspect the insulation thoroughly etc. My attitude is 'what would I pay for that if it were perfect FOR ME, minus what I need to spend to make it so' A fair few houses that I looked at ended up on the negative side of zero... It seems to me you have to put yourself in the shoes of the target market. Some may not like it, but many certainly do. Pine is the 19th century equivalent of Contiboard. Its total crap and can't see why wanyone would want it excepet to either paint it as quickly as possible (as the victorians did) or go fr a scandinavian look (which is basiocally equvalent to MFI white laminate in Ikea speak. These can easily be warmed. Can't stand them ! Reminds me of school showers. Heat them then. And avoid plain white small ones. We have a fitted carpet which we replace every now and then but why people find this such a no-no is beyond me. I don;t rehard it as a nonon, just something that has to be ripped up and tiled. -£1000 And in any case when you are buying a house, furniture is removed so shouldn't affect the price, and carpets can be. Really can't see why one has to fit what you think others *might* like just to get a sale. Then you are a poor salesman. The essence of selling is to capture the imagination of your target market. This is hard when most of them have very little. It behooves you to pander to their idiosyncrasies. |
