Smart Car
I saw a 'smart car' last week. It looked like a death trap and the three
wheel nuts thing confirmed it. 1. We have 'em by the dozen here in NE NJ. The shock of seeing them has worn off for me. Now, they're just little go-carts-galore. 2. When I put a new gas tank on my six cylinder Honda Valkyrie motorcycle a few months ago, I played with the idea of putting a Smart Car emblem on there instead of the stock Valkyrie emblem. Didn't do it, but hey... I thought it was funny. -- Regards, Joe Agro, Jr. (800) 871-5022 01.908.542.0244 Automatic / Pneumatic Drills: http://www.AutoDrill.com Multiple Spindle Drills: http://www.Multi-Drill.com Production Tapping: http://Production-Tapping-Equipment.com/ Flagship Site: http://www.Drill-N-Tap.com VIDEOS: http://www.youtube.com/user/AutoDrill V8013-R |

Still preferable to "compacted in a tin can" I think. I'm sure you do but can only wonder why. The striking thing about Smart owners is that they seem not to die in their vehicles. Driving a dinky car is different. The same cannot be said of Bikers, and I spent four years in CA with one of the original Kitana's and then an GSX 1100 R. That was four years of making the mistake of thinking I was invincible. I wasn't, just lucky..... -- John R. Carroll Your chance of dying while riding a motorcycle is eight times greater than your chance in a car, on a per-mile basis. I doubt if the Smart Car is eight times more deadly than the average car. I doubt that there is a citable statistic Ed, but my experience is that the deadliness of the conveyance is directly proportional to the attentiveness and experience of the operator. I can tell you that is a statistical fact with small private passenger aircraft, business class turbo-props ( Yeah - from the S/M) and business class jets both from my personal experience and the stats. Don't know about anything land bound except boats and ships. The same is true there. Paying attention, and not just to what you are doing but anticipating the other guy, counts. I'll bet people driving these cracker boxes do that. Good for them! -- John R. Carroll I put around 80,000 miles on an MG Midget when I was in college. On two occasions I was able to steer out of trouble that caught the car *behind* me. In one case, in very heavy traffic on Labor Day in 1970, the car ahead of me crashed into the car ahead of him, and the car behind me crashed into the car that had been ahead of me. g Meantime, I was parked on the shoulder by the time the crashes stopped. But, as you say, I was always very alert in that little sardine can. -- Ed Huntress |

When I put a new gas tank on my six cylinder Honda Valkyrie motorcycle a few months ago, I played with the idea of putting a Smart Car emblem on there instead of the stock Valkyrie emblem. Didn't do it, but hey... I thought it was funny. They apparently toss the things in the canals as a drinking game in Amsterdam. I thought this was a joke when I first heard it but apparently not. I'm starting to see them here in LA which means there must be a bunch of them on the road. They breed, given a favorable climate and enough food. Then they form herds. Soon, they will begin to mutate. The fear is they will eventually become immune to antibiotics. LOL What I find extremely humorous is a guy with a motorcycle calling anything "a death trap ". Thrown clear vs. compacted... Some survival chance vs. coffin... Never seen an LA Freeway, apparently. "Thrown clear" equals "Knocked off and then Run over". -- John R. Carroll |

Sore as hell, but not so much as a scratched elbow despite not wearing a helmet. Last time I ever rode without one too... Jon |

Carroll Your chance of dying while riding a motorcycle is eight times greater than your chance in a car, on a per-mile basis. I doubt if the Smart Car is eight times more deadly than the average car. I suspect that your chances of being in an accident are slightly higher in a smart car due to it's relative invisibility in some traffic conditions. I'm pretty sure your chances of serious injury or death if you are in an accident are a good deal higher in a smart car than in a "normal" size vehicle, unless of course you have an accident with another midget car. |

The front end was reduced to confetti, but the passenger compartment was remarkably undamaged. The passenger door was even still openeable. I don't know if the accident was survivable, but the car did a lot better than you would suspect. Most of us have done the egg drop thing in high school science class and know that the condition of the exterior cage has little to do with the condition of the contents after impact. |

-- John R. Carroll |
