Lathe coolant
Hi All,
Setting up a new (used) lathe and wondered what the group used for coolant. My old mills have a gear oil consistancy "coolant" in them and I use water/oil emulsion in the radial drill. We turn a wide variety of materials. Thanks, |

I hate fooling with water soluable stuff, had been using MObil Gamma
IIRC, but have since changed to regular automatic transmission fluid, in both the lathe, mill and horizontal bandsaw.......I don't notice any differences. If I need a dark or sulphurized fluid I usualy apply it with an oil can and let it mix with the ATF..... ATF seems to smell and not do a whole lot for cooling. The water soluable
work well for me but I am able to clean up at the end of a job and oil down the lathe. "~Roy~" wrote in message ... We turn a wide variety of materials. Thanks, Used to use water soluble in my engine lathe. Mainly do CNC milling and the lathe would get lonely sometimes. The water will evaporate and leave oily residue behind, with fine swarf, etc. This residue was clogging the passages for the way lube. After cleaning out, I switched to real cutting oil. Coolant, like chips, will get into places you can't imagine. buckshot |
