Robot Kills Man at Volkswagen Plant in Germany
Thu, 07/02/2015 - 9:26am The Associated Press Get today's design engineering headlines and news - Sign up now! A robot has killed a contractor at one of Volkswagen's production plants in Germany, the automaker said Wednesday. The man died Monday at the plant in Baunatal, about 100 kilometers (62 miles) north of Frankfurt, VW spokesman Heiko Hillwig said. The 22-year-old was part of a team that was setting up the stationary robot when it grabbed and crushed him against a metal plate, Hillwig said. He said initial conclusions indicate that human error was to blame, rather than a problem with the robot, which can be programmed to perform various tasks in the assembly process. He said it normally operates within a confined area at the plant, grabbing auto parts and manipulating them. Another contractor was present when the incident occurred, but wasn't harmed, Hillwig said. He declined to give any more details about the case, citing an ongoing investigation. German news agency dpa reported that prosecutors were considering whether to bring charges, and if so, against whom. |

Yeah, a "robot". If it was called what it is, a CNC assembly machine,
how much news play would it get? |

They're gentle. They won't smash you against a steel plate, like the one at VW. And, since they're computerized, nothing can ever go wrong...go wrong...go wrong.... Here's an article on them by Kip Hanson, who is one of the better writers in the field: http://www.ctemag.com/aa_pages/2015/150108-Robots.html There are many more technical articles about them around the Web. -- Ed Huntress |

Right. I've been visiting plants with robots since the late '70s. The damned things still give me the creeps. We have three robots at work. One on the slaughter floor has a brisket saw. In the boning room, the first one grabs a lamb carcass off the line with a huge multi-finger gripper. The second has an approx 4'dia rotary blade that saws the carcass into sections for further processing. Have had to go into the cage a couple times to work on the conveyor. Even with it locked out and isolated, I stay low. Real low, below where the gripper robot operates... Here's a PDF file that describes the setup: http://www.ampc.com.au/site/assets/media/Innovation-Award/ME-706-AMPC-MLA-Case-12-Scott-V4.pdf Jon |

Heh, shows how much attention I pay to the robots, reading that PDF file, there's 3 robots in this 2nd setup. Two with grippers the one with the saw. To cut myself a bit of slack, I don't have much to do with the boning room and the way I enter and exit, the 2nd robot is not exactly front and center in my field of vision. They are impressive to watch, and pretty much state of the art. Jon |

Yield gains were achieved due to increase in cut accuracy and reduction in bone dust when compared to bandsaw use." That would be creepy. Don't make them angry.
