Why?

What are the ballistics like? The range? Is there anything that this can
kill that a .50 or a .30 can't with one shot? Keep in mind, you'll be
getting back up off your ass after the first round misses, while your
game/target runs for cover.

I'd have to say that the first few rounds one fires are likely to
be "flyers" - as one learns to handle the recoil.

But after that ... like the old Henry Martini in .45 - once you
learn to handle it, those you shoot at will hurt more than you.

Ayup. Watching the various videos, one can spot the guy or 3 that
handles the recoil properly, leans in, takes the shot, recovers and
would be ready to go again. No spazzing around, falling over backwards
and so forth. And NOT the big guys either. Just some normal sized guys
who obviously have put some rounds down range in the past.

Aw, that's no big thing. I've shot a large 20mm ball from a matchlock

I figure if 150 pound, five foot six Brits can go through some two
thousand rounds with a Henry Martini in one long engagement (Roakes
Drift) and still function, it should not be all that difficult for "a
grown man" to handle a .940 caliber rifle. Might take some practice,
but hey, if they can handle a .75 caliber gun (aka a 12 gauge shotgun
firing slugs), what's another .19 caliber?

The first mention of the Cone Zone G

An actually pretty effective weapon when properly employed. And with a
load of flechetts...nasty nasty nasty.

I saw an entire NVA squad once..frozen in time. Stuck to trees..like wax

Better a sore shoulder than an assegai through the gut.

Heavy double rifles were said to kill at one end and maim at the other.

Default Heavy metal! 950 caliber rifle.

When I worked for a small outfit in the late 70's, I went to a customer
that was located in the blue ridge valleys. Way up. They were an
REA Co-oP. The guys and gals made rifles in the shop 'to keep their
skill up'. One of the men had just finished his .50 black power gun
and the other supervisor was working on a tree gun. He was making
a 1.00 a 100 cal black power gun. The work at this time was on the
stock. The assembly was already tested on a sled. There was work
going on at a fever pitch to get the stock milled out just right so
there would be enough 'meat' to hold the assembly and barrel.

A tree would act as the shoulder. The shooter would be prone near 90
degree angle to the barrel - putting the eye where it needs and not
to take the kick back.

Rorke's Drift

The film is "Zulu". "Zulu Dawn" shows the nearly simultaneous battle of
Isandlwana.

http://www.amazon.com/Washing-Spears.../dp/0306808668
It's an excellent book if you can get through some of the necessarily
tedious detail. AFAIK it's the only documented instance of a strong ruler
forming a powerful military empire out of a diffuse subsistence economy, all
others occurred in dim ancient prehistory.

The short version:
http://www.casebook.org/dissertations/dst-africa.html

One of the participants inspired "the very model of a modern Major-General"
in The Pirates of Penzance"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garnet_...count_Wolseley
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSGWoXDFM64
Kevin Kline was superb as the Pirate King.
