Looking for someone who sells *new* drill press machines with 5 HP or more
and the distance from spindle axis to the column must be at least 22"

Any ideas?

It would be helpful, but not critical if they ship world wide.

Doesn't look like they have one big enough, but might be worth
contacting them anyway. Lots of companies are hungry right now and
maybe they have already been kicking around something not listed...

Are radial arm drills not usable?

Yes / No... Depends...

Yes, many are. But the customer doesn't want one for some reason and many
of them do not have a non-rotating quill that I can clamp my multiple
spindle head to. See the following example video to see what I mean:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1zM1JIxr0Q

I've built heads with guide rod set-ups for such machines, but I'm not
terribly comfortable hanging a 75 lb. head off a MT4 or MT5 that doesn't
have a draw bar set-up. When I mount the head to the non-rotating quill,
it's for both rotational stabilization and to make sure the thing doesn't
fall off the drill machine.

At the moment, I'm trying to convince the customer to go with a radial arm
drill anyhow, and even considered sending them towards a Bridgeport Series
II machine or so...

Haas, Supermax, Mazak, Mori Seiki are companies that make machines for
this.

They are called Milling Machines.

Thanks Gunner. However, you missed the part where the specified machine was
not a milling machine but a drill press only. The customer desires to avoid
milling machine-like devices for some bizzare reason. ...Otherwise, that
Bridgeport Series II machine I mentioned earlier would be awesome for them
with a nice big table, worldwide support (sort of) and a monster footprint.

The customer is in Russia and knows Knuth and Summit... But I don't think
either can make a machine that size for them.

Ah! Ok. However the requirements you spec are pretty much, with some
rare acceptions...milling country.

A quick trip to Ebay shows only a radial arm drill with a 5 hp motor on
it.

Though I did see an ad for a used Gorton 5 head pantograph sometime
today that might be modifyable to your specs. It was a big *******

Sounds like my arboga maskiner drill press. They are made in Sweden so
not all that far from your customer. My unit is a small radial arm
that doesn't take over the whole damn shop. The spindle gets somewhere
between 24 to 30 inch from the column max.

Paul,

That is exactly what I hope they do. I have a dealer who has access to
dozens of these buggers... But the customer's customer (it's complicated)
is strongly pushing for a brand new machine that is not a milling machine.

Sometimes, the customer will accept anything that works and sometimes they
want the measurements of the hidden bolts underneath the stand to match
their criteria. The end user in this case is about half-way to the
bolt-inspector type.

I won't ask, but I will suggest that the customer's customer is
a government agency. Having worked for such, I know that you can hit
rules saying that you *cannot* buy certain general purpose machine
tools, because they are the sole province of the official machine shop.
Getting anything that matches the description of a milling machine, for
example, requires tons of paperwork, and it still may not be approved.
The same used to apply to computers before the time when one was
*required* on every desk. :-)

Glad to be retired from all that paperwork. :-)

Good Luck,
DoN.

Hey..that looks like a pretty nice drill! Thanks for the Link!!

It does -- with the assumption that it needs three phase power,
but even the largest of them does not have the spindle center to column
clearance Joe needs. The biggest (dimension 'D') is:

15.75" (400mm)

unless they could come up with a special mounting system for the head
and a custom table.

Or -- perhaps Joe could make a multi-drill head for it which
added about a 5" offset to the working spindles -- perhaps with feelers
back to the column to prevent it from rotating around the main machine's
spindle.

And -- of course they leave off the spec which would tell me
that *I* could not get one -- the price. :-)

Enjoy,
DoN.

I noticed that late last night... I need a few hundred more mm.

I am exploring the off-set idea with the customer though. It might be a
workable solution... They are not convinced that it is yet but I'm using my
"convince them" e-mail voice.

I hung a high speed drill press head (0-20,000 rpm) off the spindle of
our large Grizzly mill/drill in order to work on a printed circuit
board. The weight didn't seem to cause a problem. So your thought might
be the way to proceed.
