Are radial arm drills not usable?
Yes / No... Depends...
Yes, many are. But the customer doesn't want one for some reason and many
of them do not have a non-rotating quill that I can clamp my multiple
spindle head to. See the following example video to see what I mean:

I've built heads with guide rod set-ups for such machines, but I'm not
terribly comfortable hanging a 75 lb. head off a MT4 or MT5 that doesn't
have a draw bar set-up. When I mount the head to the non-rotating quill,
it's for both rotational stabilization and to make sure the thing doesn't
fall off the drill machine.
At the moment, I'm trying to convince the customer to go with a radial arm
drill anyhow, and even considered sending them towards a Bridgeport Series
II machine or so...
