It's like, we'd love to help the guy out but we think it's probably better for him to find a way on his own to pay for his obligations. If we helped him it might make him weak, and we wouldn't want that to happen. Hawke According to an actual study Conservatives were found to be more generous than Liberals. It seems the Liberals thought the government should do the giving. There's truth in that. But, as a study done a few years ago showed, the large majority of it was religion-based and often socially coerced by the religions involved. The correlation between conservatism and active practice of a religion is quite high, as I'm sure you know. The objection to substituting private charity for a government safety net is that the wealthy individuals who are so generous tend to support those people, and those ideas, that they favor -- and to hell with everyone else. This idea has been floating around for at least 250 years and was a point of contention before this country was founded. The real hard-core conservatives who provided most of the thought that preceded today's "conservatism" -- people like Milton Friedman, Barry Goldwater and the like -- acknowledged this point and proposed a negative income tax to deal with it. "Giving" to their own churchres, is like charitable giving to one's own golf club -- these "charitable donations" are club fees for belonging to a social club/church. i If you discount that giving at church by conservatives you see what's left. It doesn't amount to jack ****. Which only proves my point. It's totally against conservatism to be generous. A conservative believes he gets to keep what he has and you get your own. It just doesn't compute to a conservative why he should give anything to anyone. They think if you want something you should get it on your own and if you can't you don't deserve to have it. The idea of giving to the poor is a Christian idea but is sure isn't a conservative one. Hawke |
