Well if you are reading the test groups you must be pretty bored

The test news groups are for testing posting scripts, newsreader settings, ect, w/o
anoying others in groups that have actual readers.

They are intended to test your newsreader software & connection to
your news server. A lot of news servers have their own test group.

Another reason there are far more test groups than needed is from people
testing there ability to send control messages. Creating more test groups in
the process...

http://groupsearch.alt-config.net/engine.html is a handy tool intended to check
how many servers a group is carried by, also provides a link to the original
control message (if one exists) so you can find out when and by whom a group
was created.
