Obama Stumbles Out of the Gate
Monday, January 19, 2009 4:46 PM By: Jim Meyers Barack Obama has yet to be sworn in as president, but he’s already been bedeviled by a series of miscues and unfortunate revelations. Among them: Obama named Timothy Geithner as his Treasury secretary, only to find out that Geithner had failed to pay $34,000 in taxes several years ago. Geithner, who in his post would be the head of the IRS, did not pay self-employment taxes for money he earned from 2001 to 2004 while working for the International Monetary Fund. He paid some of the taxes in 2006, after an IRS audit, but it wasn't until days before Obama tapped him to head Treasury that he paid back the rest. New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson withdrew his nomination to be Obama's commerce secretary amid a grand jury investigation. The jury is investigating how a California company that contributed to Richardson's political activities won a New Mexico state contract worth more than $1 billion. The arrest of Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich was an embarrassment to Obama, whose ties to the governor run primarily through Chicago slum lord and felon Tony Rezko. Rezko served as the political godfather for both Blagojevich and Obama, helping both to rise in Chicago and Illinois politics. Obama himself has credited Rezko with helping bolster his political career. Rezko raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for both politicians. The FBI charges that Blagojevich conspired to sell the Illinois Senate seat vacated by Obama. Obama personally endorsed Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s stance against seating Roland Burris to replace Obama in the Senate after Burris was appointed by scandal-scarred Gov. Blagojevich. But Obama and Reid eventually had to back down, and Obama conceded that when the Senate seats Burris “I’m going to work with Roland Burris just like I work with all the other senators.” Obama’s choice for Attorney General, Eric Holder, acknowledged that he made mistakes in the 2001 pardon of fugitive financier Marc Rich when Holder was Clinton’s deputy attorney general. Rich's wife was a major donor to the Democratic Party and to Clinton's library. Holder urged Rich's lawyer to solicit a pardon directly from the White House. Holder has also been criticized for his role in the April 2000 government raid that led to the return of a Cuban boy, Elian Gonzales, to his homeland, and for the pardons of 16 Puerto Rican nationalists responsible for a series of bombings that killed six people and injured dozens more. Obama’s appointment of Leon Panetta as the new CIA director drew howls of protest from Sen. Diane Feinstein, chair of the Senate intelligence committee. Panetta has no experience with the intelligence community, and Feinstein issued a statement making it clear she preferred a career intelligence professional. Reports surfaced that Obama’s choice to be his global warming czar, former EPA administrator Carol Browner, was listed as one of 14 leaders of a socialist group's Commission for a Sustainable World Society. The organization calls for "global governance" and says rich countries must shrink their economies to address climate change, according to the Washington Times. Obama was also criticized for his appointment of Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano as secretary of Homeland Security. “He could have selected a Rudy Giuliani or a Louis Free or a Ray Kelly — anyone with real life experience in battling terrorists,” political analyst Dick Morris observed. “Instead he chose a governor with no knowledge of the subject whose obvious credential is her proximity to the border.” http://www.newsmax.com/headlines/oba...19/173032.html And this A telecommunications company has confirmed for this columnist that its vice president for policy—who is also an Obama donor and a former lobbyist—is advising Barack Obama’s transition team on telecom policy. Obama’s transition team, which has failed to disclose this executive’s involvement, happens to have proposed a significant change in telecom policy that will profit that very company, called Clearwire. By pushing to delay the long-scheduled transition of television broadcasting from analog signals to digital signals, president-elect Obama is directly aiding Sprint and its partner Clearwire while hurting Verizon. Sanchez’s detailed and well-reported article on Ars Technica called to light these conflicts of interest—and the fact that Salemme’s name is nowhere to be found on Change.gov. As of yesterday, the Obama transition team still hadn’t addressed the concerns or added Salemme’s name. The transition team did not return a phone call or respond to an email request for comment from this author. http://www.dcexaminer.com/opinion/co...TimothyCarney/ Obamas_secret_telecom_advisor_pushing_his_companys _interest_011609.html |

This means the pickings are pretty slim to get anyone un-tainted. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he is able to separate the campaign rhetoric from the real world. Notice how quickly he has abandoned the fringe left? And, boy are they ****ed! My biggest concerns are how he's going to handle outrageous spending and global warming(kumbaya). Better chance there will be something USEFULL left with the current administration than with the last, and most likely the swirling will stop sooner as well. No way to prove it, even in hindsite, because NO ONE knows for sure how BAD it would have gotten under the old administration, or how long it would have continued. |

Well according to Ed it isn't so bad. I disagree. Since we agreed to disagree and meet back on this subject in a year, I think we need to let history take its course. Now of course I am scouting out bridges in case it get worse than what I think it will get. TMT |

And if you don't believe too much CO2 is not good for you...hold your breath and watch what happens. TMT- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - Oh look...we all get to start looking for evidence against Bush and Cheney. Undoing Bush: Obama orders easier access to records Margaret Talev | McClatchy Newspapers last updated: January 21, 2009 06:39:11 PM WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama, in his first full day in office, revoked a controversial executive order signed by President Bush in 2001 that limited release of former presidents' records. The new order could expand public access to records of President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney in the years to come as well as other past leaders, said Steven Aftergood, director of the Project on Government Secrecy at the Federation of American Scientists. "It's extraordinary that a new president would address this issue on his first full day in office," Aftergood said. "It signifies the great importance he attaches to open, accountable government. The new order suggests President Obama will take a narrow view of executive privilege and assert it in a much more limited way than what we've seen in the recent past." Under Bush's order, former presidents had broad ability to claim executive privilege and could designate others including family members who survive them to exercise executive privilege on their behalf. Obama's new order gives ex-presidents less leeway to withhold records, Aftergood said, and takes away the ability of presidents' survivors to designate that privilege. Separately, an Obama memorandum issued Wednesday also appears to effectively rescind a 2001 memo by President Bush's then-Attorney Gen. John Ashcroft giving agencies broad legal cover to reject public disclosure requests. "For a long time now, there's been too much secrecy in this city. This administration stands on the side not of those who seek to withhold information but with those who seek it to be known," Obama said before a gathering that included his senior staff. "The mere fact that you have the legal power to keep something secret does not mean you should always use it. Transparency and the rule of law will be the touchstones of this presidency." |

Laugh-out-loud, wet-your-pants funny! One of the few authors I will pay full hard-back price for the latest. I asked again -- yes, she's read Evanovich and liked whatever she read. You'd have to be here to appreciate how far all of this is from her attention right now. Almost any question like that gets a look that says, "are you crazy?" I think the phrase for her now is short-tempered. I really don't know how she's doing it. She's tough. It will be another year before she's back into a reading mode. -- Ed Huntress |
