Good combination of cheap, good pictures, and sensitive motion sensor. Downside is it takes a couple of seconds to wake up and shoot a pix after it senses motion. Wish I could hack it to never shut down because I'm running it off AC, but if you use it off DC you need it to go to sleep for battery life. There are better one out there, more expensive. Avoid any that do not date & time stamp the pictures - the cheap ones don't ;( Free men own guns - www(dot)geocities(dot)com/CapitolHill/5357/ |

When I was still going on trips I had a Garmin GPS III velcroed to the dash. When ever I had to stop and leave the truck unattended, that is exactly where I put a cap/hat that was in the truck just for that purpose. You had to look really hard from outside the truck to realize that there was something hiding underneath the hat. I always kept a spare coat, sweatshirt... something commonly seen in vehicles of little value covering anything of value. Out of sight always worked for me (knock on wood). -- Leon Fisk Grand Rapids MI/Zone 5b Remove no.spam for email |

Similar thing happened to some guys my mother knows. They went climbing somewhere remote, but left some gear and bikes in their van. When they returned, the gear had been stolen. So the next week they did the same, but hid near the van. Nothing happened, so they did it the week after, and the guys broke into the van again, so they grabbed them and took them to the police. And then what happened? I think the response from the police was positive, that is, they charged the guys, but I don't remember for sure. It goes back to when I was in high school. Chris |

Nothing happened, so they did it the week after, and the guys broke into the van again, so they grabbed them and took them to the police. Years ago when I was in the Marines, I had a Staff Sergeant in my department whose friends in Laurel bay had been burgled. He did a bit of sleuthing and realized that other Marines had their homes tossed and the common point is that they all had contacted the MP detachment asking them to keep an eye on their homes while they were on deployment or vacation. So SSGT Doyle, decided to set up a sting. Told the MP's that he had a monster collection of firearms and other valuables and was worried about them due to the recent burglaries in Laurel Bay and asked them to keep an eye on his place while he was TAD to where ever. Doyle let his grass grow long and had some of the other Marines that homes were burglarized over each night to see if lightning struck again. It was the base MP's that broke in one night. They were met by some angry Marines with firearms that had way too many beers while playing poker and waiting. The South Carolina state police were called in. Score one for the good guys. I liked SSGT Doyle. Sorta like Gunner on steroids. Urrah! What happened to the burglars? Anyway. The police officer said that they stay in touch with the three local pawn shops. I gave him the serial number of the stolen GPS. I will keep an eye on ebay myself, I set a perl script watch to look for any GPSes within 25 miles from me. I personally think that this is a very stupid thing to do in general and therefore believe that it is local kids who did it. My homemade foam coolers are many times more efficient than commercial coolers. And they cost only a few bucks to make. Don, you forgot to ask Ed what secret foam was used for the super-efficient coolers. Just ordinary Styrofoam blueboard, 2" thick. I use 1- or 1-1/2" for very small ones. Have you seen what's in commercial coolers lately? Ha! You're lucky if it's a half-inch thick. I've made close to a dozen of these over the years. Mostly they're to keep equipment from overheating. An old rubbing-alcohol bottle, filled with water and frozen, will keep all my blood-testing stuff cool for two days inside of a 8-inch-cube of 2" Styrofoam, inside of a hot car. I just cut it with a carpenter's saw, and I cut a rabbet in the top and the lid, with a utility knife, to get a good fit. I keep it closed with a big rubber band or, for the big ones, a piece of thin bungee cord. Glue the pieces together with something that doesn't dissolve Styrofoam. I usually use waterproof Titebond, or Elmer's white waterproof glue. These things last longer than you'd think if you don't beat them up. I have a little one I made for film that must be 20 years old. Secret weapon: minnows, particularly fragile ones like rainbows, succumb much more quickly to overtemp than to lack of oxygen. I think most will vouch that I am not liberal by todays sense of the word. People that were going on free and easy not worrying about ripped off have a mind change, expecially if they can't really afford being ripped off. I live in a state where if someone is running out of the house with my coin collection, I can't use deadly force to stop him. SOB can shoot me the finger and leave out the front door. There I stand in my PJ's, gun in hand, powerless watching my valuables leave. Yeah, I'm going to feel great every day after that. I can't truely defend my property when I'm home. So far I haven't been broke in but one time and my mindset is going to change. Not feeling safe installing or leaving an item of property in your vehicle again is the effect of that smash and grab. Iggy will change his behavior a bit most likely. Will always take that look backward, check on his vehical more often, ect. Maybe I'm not reading you right but the effects are greater than the simple loss of the property. Wes |

Had a "smash and grab" accident today
Wes,
thanks for the reply, that statement is a hot button for me. I apologize, I should have cooled down a min or two before blasting off!!! I do understand that the crime will result in changed behavior and that is understandable. I was reading to much into the statement and as we used to say back in the day...... I let my mouth over run my ass. thanks bob in phx "Wes" wrote in message ... "Bob in Phx" wrote: What a crock,,, "one never feels secure again" BullSH!T..... Talk about liberal .... Its like "oh I tripped on the stairs, ill never go up stairs again"... People need to get over it.... My Grandfather used to call stuff like this experience and then say, " Bet you will never do that again" but that crap of "Ill never feel secure again" ...... arrrrgggg. Bob, that was my comment. Wes |
