Default Used machinery prices and availability in Portland, OR area?

How are the prices and availability for used American machinery in
Portland, Oregon?

Are Clausing 5914's or similar machines readily avalible?

I am contemplating a move and was wondering about whether it would be
better to haul my lathe or sell it here and replace it in Portland.

Thanks,
BobH

Buying GOOD used American machinery is not what it used to be.

The lathe that you have...is it one that you are planning on
upgrading?

If so sell it.

But don't expect to replace it anytime soon....finding a good machine
at a good price takes time...sometimes lots of time.

I travel alot so I get around to lots of used dealers when I have time
to kill....the good stuff isn't out there any more.

Where did it go? Likely China.

Not too much availability unless you are very patient. Metal lathes show
up about a couple times a month on the PDX Craigslist, milling machines are
less frequent. See

http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/tls/441694654.html
http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/tls/441279953.html
http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/tls/439442854.html

for the current selection of "Rare", "Antique" of otherwise overpriced
and/or marginally functional metal lathe offerings.

By all means, bring any machines you have.
Used equipment availability throughout the Northwest is virtually nil.

Seattle has one very small used machine dealer-
http://www.hallidie.com/

check out how little they have, and what the prices are.

Portland has a bit more available, but still not much.

If you look at the craigslist links above- you see small hobby size
machines at very high prices- and even these are rare.

There never was much industry out here, and so there is nowhere near
the amount of used machines you would find in other parts of the
country.

And the economy in the northwest is head and shoulders above many
other areas- which means lots of money chasing very few tools.

It might pay to load up a truck at an eastern auction and head west.

Availability is "somewhat" better in the SF Bay area (and even better in the
LA area...). And you can drive from Portland to "Ess Eff" in a day..

That's a ten or twelve hour drive in a fast car. Double that for a
truck and trailer through all those hills and dales.

Serious tool buyers never bring a car..never enough room for the
purchases.
