Default Best way to clean a negleted Shizuoka mill???

I just bought a Shizuoka CNC mill . The iron is in super excellent shape but
it has been
neglected for about 5 years. I plan to load it on a flat bed trailer and
bring it to my
shop (about .5 miles away) I want to really clean this thing up before I
bring it inside
for refurbishing. I can rent a high pressure washer if needed to knock the
crud off.
But what can I use to soften this goop up. Also, do you guys think the
pressure washer
idea is ok?. I plan to remove the controls, cover up the head and use it
mostly on the main casting and knee.
Also, would it be ok to use Scotch bright pads in the table?? The table is
in mint condition
but stained from years of neglect. Any ideas appreciated.

I would not use the pressure washer. Water and/or soap is not something you
want getting into things. Do you know if the former owner used petro or water
soluble oil/coolant? If water soluble was used you'll probably have best results
using a cleaner meant to be mis\xed with water. Greased Lightning is one that
works pretty well and it cuts into the stains from way oil that you'll find on
the sides of the knee and saddle. You can fill the way lube reservoir with ATF
and pump it through liberally to clean the ways from the inside out. For the
table you can use a 1-2-3 block or a piece of flat ground stock and wrap some
emory cloth or paper on it and work it around with your water soluble cleaner or
kerosene to get stains out and smooth any dings on the surface. Kero could be
the ticket for the overall cleaning as well. Shizuoka is a family owned business
that has been around for quite some time, IIRC pre-1900. They make some very
nice iron. What controller is with the mill? Did you get an ANS or STN? Assuming
it is a knee mill you got.

Visit a do it yourself coin operated car wash on the way home?

Cool! Sounds like you got an ANS? I bought a b-3v (bedmill, no knee) that
needed some TLC in the controls dept., but seems to be in decent shape in
the mechanical dept. I have it up and running with gecko drives and EMC.
I love my little Shizuoka (formerly owned a sherline).

Here is a pic of it:
http://www.skyko.com/cncstuff/P1010035.JPG

I still need to machine a panel to hold my lcd computer monitor in the old
fanuc control arm housing...oh, and install the feet instead of leaving it
on the 2x6 boards, heh heh.

I am interested in the responses you get about how to clean it...one thing I
learned is WD40 assists rust rather than preventing it because it disolves
greases which are actually protecting your metal from oxidizing. I now
slather the whole machine in way lube and wipe it down about once a month.
Seems to be preventing any further rusting here in the pacific northwest.

If yours is similar to mine, I may be able to offer some advice/info on
things. I have *some* pages of a few of the service manuals.

I wouldn't use a pressure washer. That'll put too much water in places
water shouldn't go. Steam cleaning would be better if you want a power
method. As for the cleaning solution, a 50/50 mix of Gunk engine cleaner
and kerosene applied vigorously with a brush has always worked well for
me.

I'm always a bit dubious about using abrasives on precision machined
surfaces. But if you just can't stand the stained look, Scotchbrite pads
marked for use on non-stick cookware are relatively mild.

There's also a recipe for removing caked on gunk from that used machine you
brought home:

1 pint radiator flush
1 pint engine cleaner
1 pint synthetic cutting fluid
1 pint mineral spirits
2 tablespoons wax
4 tablespoons dishwashing detergent
Cabosil as required to thicken mixture

brush on machine, soak overnight, scrub off. Repeat if needed.

I dunno what sort of shape it is in, but this is what I did on my *old* Index:

http://www.bearlabs.com/NEXT/MILL.html

I did hose it off, and this can create problems, but if you want to be careful
use a bucket and big sponge, I think you'll get similar results without the danger
of a ton of water ending up where you can't get it out...

The stuff I used was "Mean Green" found in Family Dollar stores and other
places - almost any commercial "floor stripper" will do a good job too...

ymmv.

When I am cleaning up machines for an auction I use any water mixed
degreaser like Simple Green in a spray bottle for the painted areas and
10W20 or 30 for the bare metal. Takes a little time but gives very nice
results.

When I was in the Artillery, we used big pressure steam cleaners to knock
the crud off of things. If you're going to strip and lube things fairly
quickly, that might work well for you.
