Many Republicans are persons of good will who believe strongly in the
ideals on which this nation was founded. They differ with Democrats how
to attain them, but they believe in them.

The US was founded on slavery.

Tis true! Most of the constitution was written to appease the slave
owners.
]

[
The three-fifths clause was written to appease the slave owners.

That's pretty much it.
]

[
Four specific provisions in the new Constitution dealt directly
with slavery, while many other provisions did so indirectly. The
four specific provisions on slavery we (1) three-fifths of the
slave population was to be considered in apportioning direct
taxes
and representation in the U.S. House of Representatives; (2) the
foreign slave trade could not be prohibited before 1808 and a tax
levied on imported slaves could not exceed ten dollars per slave;
(3) runaway slaves had to be returned to their masters "on
demand"
and could not be emancipated; and (4) no amendment to the
Constitution prohibiting the slave trade could be adopted before
1808. [Page 43]
A partial list of constitutional provisions that indirectly
affected
slavery included (1) authorizing Congress to call forth the
militia
to help suppress domestic insurrections (including slave
uprisings);
(2) prohibitions on both the federal and state governments from
levying export duties, thereby guaranteeing that the products of
slaves (tobacco, indigo, rice, etc.) would not be taxed; (3)
providing for the indirect election of the president through
electors based on representation in Congress, which, because of
the
three-fifths clause, inflated the influence of the white Southern
vote; (4) requiring a three-fourths approval of the states to
adopt
amendments to the Constitution, thus giving the South a veto
power
over all potential amendments; and (5) limiting the privileges
and
immunities clause to "citizens," thus denying these protections
to
slaves and in some cases to free blacks.

IOW the constitution is littered with clauses relating to the slave
trade.

Which underscores the legal and ethical confusion that existed
at the time and the continued compromise of principle
anticipated.

FWIW, god makes his decision when (or before) you were born. Ain't
nothing you can do...

Gotta love the Calvinists.

No, really. If you don't, the current crop will put you in jail.

[
Much has been said about President Bush's mistakes in the invasion of
Iraq, not the least of which has been the inability to locate Saddam's
huge cache of WMDs.

But another accusation that has been made is that Bush mounted this
invasion without bothering to have an exit strategy.

Well, nothing could be further from the truth.

Bush had a definite exit strategy, one that he, himself, devised and
ordered.

As our troops were entering Iraq, the commanding officers were told
that each company should designate one man to paint a mark on each
tree so that they could find the exit.
