"Peaceful" protesters topple Columbus statue and throw it in a lake

I meant that Britain didnt have a civil war over slavery because the slave owners were generously compensated. But the other possibility is that the slaves were all in the colonies, not in Britain itself, and mostly in the Bahamas etc. Then again, those holding the property were acting in a highly immoral manner The South had an evil streak in it Or decided that the civil war was about a lot more than just slavery. That is an excuse to down play a noble act on the part of the united states. There are those that wish to wash away all our achievements and revise our history. I was commenting on why the south chose to go to war. |

Tacky's Revolt was bad enough but the Baptist War in '31 and '32 finished the job and led to the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833. As trivia, Tacky had a lucrative business selling slaves to the British until a neighboring tribe captured him and sold him to the British. I don't think he has a statue anywhere but it's an interesting question. What do you do with a black slave trader who wound up a black slave in some sort of cosmic karma? |

The Brits had much bigger problems than slave revolts, most obviously with the Indian Mutiny and getting kicked out of Afghanistan very unceremoniously indeed. And the Sikh wars.
