Maybe because generous compensation

The Emancipation Proclamation was the largest single
uncompensated property grab in our history.

I meant that Britain didnt have a civil war over slavery
because the slave owners were generously compensated.

But the other possibility is that the slaves were all in the
colonies, not in Britain itself, and mostly in the Bahamas etc.

The Brits had their own problems. Tacky's Revolt was bad enough but the
Baptist War in '31 and '32 finished the job and led to the Slavery
Abolition Act of 1833.

As trivia, Tacky had a lucrative business selling slaves to the British
until a neighboring tribe captured him and sold him to the British. I
don't think he has a statue anywhere but it's an interesting question.
What do you do with a black slave trader who wound up a black slave in
some sort of cosmic karma?
