Default Harley-Davidson to shift some bike production outside US

Harley-Davidson had some 'good news' for Harley owners in the EU about
the easy to win trade war.

"Harley-Davidson plans to shift some motorcycle production away from the
US to avoid the "substantial" burden of European Union tariffs."

Sad. Levi's went to **** when production moved away from the US.

Never mind Yankees. Take heart from the fact that Birmingham Small Arms
have done very well in India.

Jarrbs. It's all about jarrbs. Good jarrbs.

Think about the national security and the children.

In cages.

Thanks for that find, my furry friend. It's a stunning example of exactly
what so many of us warned was coming from Trump's trade war. Here it is
from US source:

http://thehill.com/policy/finance/in...me-motorcycles

"Harley-Davidson will move the production of motorcycles bound for European countries out of the United States, citing rising costs from European Union (EU) tariffs on their products.

The company said in a filing Monday that the EU tariffs on motorcycles exported from the U.S. rose from 6 percent to 31 percent, the Associated Press reported. Motorcycles bound for European countries will now be produced in overseas factories."

There is your "making America great again", in action. But heh, trade wars
are good and easy to win, right?

And clearly it can't be very old at all. HD says they are doing it because
of the new EU tariffs that are going into effect as retaliation against
Trump's tariffs on them. The EU only announced those tariffs about a week
ago.

Really? Mahindra bought the BSA brand. BSA stopped making bikes about 40
years ago so they didn't exactly get a going concern. Royal Enfield also
stopped building bikes in 1970; India Enfield lives on and even got the
rights to the 'Royal' part of the name. They are even penetrating the US
market as new riders look for smaller, less powerful bikes. Triumph was
re-invented from scratch at Hinckley after the Meriden version died in
the '80s. Triumph is doing well although many of their models should be
called Thai-Rumps if you know what I mean.

OMG! Suicide Road Kings! Harley has been looking overseas for some time,
particularly for smaller bikes than their traditional line (ignoring the
Aermacchi adventure). This year they have the 'Street' a 500 cc bike and
have dropped the Dyna that's been around since 1991, or 1971 if you
count the original FX. The market is changing.

Looking to grow sales outside the US isn't the issue here. The issue
is that because of Trump's tariffs and the EU retaliation directed at
HD with new tariffs, HD will now move production of bikes sold in the EU
from the USA to the EU. So much for bringing jobs back here......

Early this year Harley-Davidson said they would move much of their plant
operations in Kansas City to Thailand.

That was long before Tariffs were announced.

So Trump was lying again when he said he was surprised that HD was
moving production out of the USA the other day? We'll add that to
the ever growing list. For the record, HD's previous announcement was
that they were closing Kansas City and moving production to York, PA.

There is a degree of irony considering Harley petitioned for, and
received, a protective tariff of 49.5% on the larger Japanese motorcycles.

https://www.nytimes.com/1983/04/02/b...torcycles.html

British motorcycles were exempt. Of course by 1983 Britain wasn't making
motorcycles but the thought was there.

On those 10 inch wheels at 65 it felt fast enough. I didn't need to do
200. It wasn't particularly fast, but it WAS pretty "quick".

Not quite in the benelli Valcano class --- THAT was SCARY.
185CC 2 stroker on a 125 lb minibike, 200 made it to the USA - not
sure how many in Canada but we had one at the dealership/gfarage where
I worked. I was only about 100lb at the time, and it would just as
soon toss me off as let me ride it. The boss was over 300, and it gave
him a wild enough ride.
67mph top speed - but 0-67 was QUICK if you could stay on.

I don't think I would want to do 65 on a Burgman and it has a 15" front
wheel in front.

185CC 2 stroker on a 125 lb minibike,

My first rodeo with Japanese two-strokes was a Yamaha 180 cc, a YCS1 I
think that a friend left to my tender care when he went into the Navy.
Let's just say I was used to a panhead Harley that required a jack to
get the front wheel off the ground. I don't remember how much it weighed
but I do remember another friend and I tossing it into the trunk of my
'60 Plymouth to take it out for a little dirt riding. I think Yamaha
made a scrambler variant but as far as we were concerned if it had two
wheels and a running engine it was a scrambler.

We survived. My friend managed to break his collarbone riding a
snowmobile on wet grass but that's another story.

Thanks for that find, my furry friend. It's a stunning example of exactly
what so many of us warned was coming from Trump's trade war. Here it is
from US source:

http://thehill.com/policy/finance/in...me-motorcycles

"Harley-Davidson will move the production of motorcycles bound for
European countries out of the United States, citing rising costs from
European Union (EU) tariffs on their products.

The company said in a filing Monday that the EU tariffs on motorcycles
exported from the U.S. rose from 6 percent to 31 percent, the Associated
Press reported. Motorcycles bound for European countries will now be
produced in overseas factories."

There is your "making America great again", in action. But heh, trade wars
are good and easy to win, right?

Last 30 years I watch so much moving away. Got a better idea ?

The Commiecrats who loaded the bureaucracy with their disciples who bury business with onerous regulation after costly regulation. Some bureaucrat who is not an elected official can write a regulation that carries the force of law and such "regulations" have driven many manufacturers to move their production to Asia where they don't have to put up with the costly nonsense. There is one federal agency called OSHA, Occupational Safety and Health Administration which has been the bane of business since its inception. Agents will inspect a manufacturing plant for safety violations but will usually find something trivial like a broken light switch cover and fine the manufacturer tens of thousands of dollars. Businesses like people will vote with their feet and move someplace where they're not constantly harassed. That's why businesses are leaving the Leftist utopia of Californiastan for business-friendly states. o_O

Isn't a tariff usually put on something imported not exported? I don't recall reading anything about the government placing a tariff on exported Harley-Davidson products. Perhaps there are some foreign-made parts that Harley-Davidson is using that may be subject to a tariff? Perhaps the company should source everything from The USA so they can claim it's a completely American made bike? ^_^

The biggest disaster in the last 30 years was a financial crisis in the
mortgage market and a housing bubble, entirely of our own making. IDK
how you're watching money flows. Most of our trade deficit comes back
as investment in the USA, investment that produces jobs. I've said what
I would do here many times. I would identify the specific worst case
offender, which is China and I'd address the worst of that, eg theft
of intellectual property and markets where they really are providing
big subsidies to industries or erecting trade barriers. I'd get together
with our allies who have the same issues. I'd take it to the WTO and
if we can't get satisfaction there, then I'd work with our allies to take
specific, coordinated steps, that could include tariffs, against China.

What did Trump do? He attacked all our allies. One of the most harsh
attacks was leveled at Canada, where we have a trade SURPLUS! Trump
bragged about not even knowing whether we had a surplus or deficit with
Canada, which should tell you all you need to know about Trump. Trump's
actions now has our former allies on the same side of China and Russia,
working against us. And how is this going to achieve trade balance?
Who's going to blink first? Did you see how China crushed SK when they
got ****ed because SK was putting in a new missile defense system?
China got the Chinese people to stop buying SK products, stop going there
on holiday. It royally screwed SK. China can do and is in the process
of doing exactly the same thing to Trump. A tofu maker in China gets cut
off from soybeans from the USA. Do you think they are going to protest,
be on the nightly news, be a campaign issue? On the other hand, the
soybean farmers in the USA are already being hurt and heard and it's
only beginning. So, who's going to blink first? You'll likely see
the same thing you just saw with NK. Trump will declare victory, claim
it's all fixed, there is no more trade deficit, call off his tariffs,
even though almost nothing will have changed. And usually, even doing
nothing is better than doing the wrong thing. If Trump doesn't cave,
then by election day the layoffs and damage from his trade war should
be readily visible and I would not be surprised that it becomes a very
big campaign issue. How will the GOP like running on that issue?

I forgot to add on the list of things to do, we need to fix our budget
deficit problem and start reducing the national debt. Again, where is
Trump on that? He just signed the biggest spending bill in history,
one that greatly increased both domestic and military spending. His
Sec of Agriculture is now running around saying that Trump will protect
the US farmers being hurt by his new tariffs. How much is that going to
cost us? How many times have you heard Trump mention the deficit or debt?
He doesn't care if it's a big govt, big spending, as long as he gets to
do it.

Again, if you're going to express opinions here, it would be a good idea to
understand the facts first. Not hard to do either, it's been all over the
news and maybe if you watched that instead of Looney Tunes, you'd learn.
Let;s review. Trump recently put new 25% tariffs on all steel and 10% on all
aluminum. The EU warned Trump that if he did it, they would retaliate.
Trump persisted, so the EU slapped new tariffs on many US products,
including HD bikes, whiskey, and jeans. If the bike is made outside the
USA, it's not subject to the new tariffs which are ~$2,300 a bike. So,
Harley is moving production for EU bound bikes out of the USA.

Similarly, Trump got 60 people laid off and another 500 going between
now and Labor Day at the last company in the USA that makes nails.
The steel tariffs made their nails so expensive, their orders have
dropped 80%, with customers now buying nails from overseas, mainly
China. So, it's a grand slam. Trump's tariff is laying off American
workers, the plant will close, while the new orders going to China
will increase the trade deficit. It takes a real moron to do that.

Thanks to the Commiecrats screwing with industry, there aren't as many steel mills in The USA anymore so perhaps this would be a good time for the American steel industry to come back. Foreign producers were selling their steel in The USA at a lower price thus undercutting the domestic steel industry which was hampered by the high cost of government regulations. Republic Steel in Gadsden, Al is where my father worked in the engineering department for more than 30 years and the plant closed in 2000. It had been in operation for almost a century. Not far from me in downtown Birmingham is The Sloss Furnace which produced steel and I remember riding over the viaduct which is going over part of the old mill and I recall seeing the furnace in operation back in the late 1960's. It's now a museum. There is a steel mill in operation just South of Birmingham in The City of Fairfield but it's nothing like it once was when it made steel for the hulls of warships and employed thousands of workers. From what I've read, the strong Dollar made imported steel so inexpensive that the US mills couldn't compete on price. So what happens if there is another world war? Oh yea, it will be Trump's fault or whichever Republican President is in The White House. o_O
