Bird Strikes
Have you ever had a bird fly into the glass of one of your windows? My brother is living next to a nature preserve with lots of birds. His housemate had a green African parrot in a cage on the glassed in front porch. Owls were bouncing off the windows when they tried to get at that tasty looking parrot. I was in a doctor's office this morning when I picked up a bird watchers magazine and came across an ad for a company that manufactures a window film that refracts light in such a way that the birds can see it and avoid flying into the treated windows. ^_^

I think they were flying into the reflection of sky above my neighbor's house. My windows are just plain glass. -- Using Opera's mail client: http://www.opera.com/mail/ |

A medium size bird, size of robin or starling, would zoom into the sliding glass door, regroup, and then do it again a couple minutes later. For 10 or 20 minutes. Then he'd go around to the front of the house and do the same thing with that sliding glass door. Then I think he stopped, but showed up again the following year. Certainly nothing that could be seen from both sides of the house. AFAIK, it didn't kill the bird. It certainly didn't the first 400 times. [8~{} Uncle Flying Monster |

That's 3 for every person in the country. I don't believe it. They're just tryihg to sell something. How come in my whole life I've only had one bird do that and he hit the window hundreds of times and kept coming back for more, over at least 15 months. [8~{} Uncle Flying Monster |

I saw the first one when I was a kid in grammar school. We kids heard something slam into the classroom window and when we went outside, we found a dead bird with a broken neck. I think we gave it a proper burial. That was back in the middle of the last century. Perhaps evolution has rid the world of most stupid birds? ^_^ [8~{} Uncle Bird Monster |

Birds are known to eat fermented berries, makes them drunk and they fly into objects like windows. Have a photo somewhere, where a small owl flew into a sliding glass door. Made a perfect print when it knocked the dust off it. You could see details of the feather -- wings spread, etc. I have hummingbirds fly into my garage when open. Hover around the red rope and plastic knob -- thinking it is a flower. Happens often. Then the fly out. |

Your Brother's birds might have thought the parrot was invading their territory. Either that or they saw their own reflection and thought they were attacking another bird. A few months ago I heard something hit my window with a loud thump. I went outside and found a dazed hawk standing nearby. All of a sudden a small owl flew down as if to attack the hawk. The hawk reacted, spreading its wings to appear larger, and the owl flew away. Fred |

There are all sorts of wild critters and feral cats in the area that munch on the birds. There are birds of every kind on that mountain and those birds make a lot of noise. I live farther down the mountain in the valley and there are also a lot of birds around where I live. ^_^ http://ruffnermountain.org/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruffne...ature_Preserve Wikipedia got one thing wrong, it's not in Irondale which borders the area where my brother lives inside the Birmingham City limits but the preserve may extend into Irondale. I'll have to check the map but I'm sure it's in Birmingham. The area is beautiful and full of trees and the area where I live is in a neighborhood next to his and the trees are not as thick but there are still a lot of them. ^_^ [8~{} Uncle Tree Monster |

I've got a canopy on the pickup with a bunk in the bed. I was shaded up one hot afternoon with the tailgate and window open for the breeze and half asleep. A hummingbird flew in, took the twenty five cent tour, decided there wasn't anything to eat in the cave, and left. |

One perched in a tree across the street, saw the prey and chased it down near the other neighbors door. Perched back in the tree it came from, plucked feathers and ate lunch. Birds are marvels when you watch. My favorite has always been the Belted kingfisher. Wish I could fish that well... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belted_kingfisher#Ecology_and_behaviour |
