Default GE Gas Dryer Not Heating

I bought this dryer new 20 years ago and it's been unbelievably good ever since. Tonight, I threw a normal load of clothes in. It's turning and air blowing like normal, but not heating. Tried changing the settings and no change. I'll call GE in the morning, but thought maybe someone has had this happen and what to check. Gas is on and connected. No gas leaks. Filter is clear and nothing blocking the vent.

GE Model DDG8589RDMWW. Mfd 1994-95

Thanks, fellow home repairers!!

OT PS - I'm pulling for the Texas Rangers this year. They have never won the Series since they were formed in 1961 as the second version of the Washington Senators in 1961.

Dryers contain "thermal cut outs" which are known
to go bad. I've replaced several, over the years.
Please call a local appliance repair company, not
Generally Expensive.

The cut outs, typically two or three are used, on
the drum and one near the blower in the back. They
are sold in set of two or three, and it's wise to
replace all of them while you have the machine
apart.

Please check the vent hose, might be clogged.

My Mom's gas drier died recently. I'd forgot about
hot surface ignitors. Have to check that when I
look at the device. My first thought was thermal
cut outs.

some dryers have a small hole you can look in from the outside and see the ignitor glow, then the flame begin.

my bet is a igniter failure

Gas dryers may not produce heat for various reasons. The most common
problems include:

Gas valve solenoids
Thermal fuse
High Limit Thermostat

After that it can be the igniter, the gas valve itself, etc.

repairclinic.com has lots of model-specific trouble shooting tips and
videos. I recently repaired my Estate gas dryer by following the tips
found at that site. All it took was a multi-meter to test various components
based on the symptoms.

In the past I have found the gas valve solenoids to be bad. A cheap and
easy repair. This time it was the Thermal Fuse that was open. As per the
tips at the website, it is a good idea to replace the High Limit Thermostat
if the Thermal Fuse blows even if the HLT tests OK. The reason for this is
that the Thermal Fuse (which is basically the last line of defense) may have
blown because the HLT didn't cut out when it should have, even though it
tests OK when cool. Continuity when cool is required for the dryer to heat,
but if it doesn't cut out when the dryer gets too hot, the Thermal Fuse will
blow and you'll never get heat again.

There are ways to test the HLT cut off function using an electric fry pan
and/or heat gun, but the price of a new one, it is just as easy to replace
it.

The prices at repairclinic.com may be a few pennies more than other on-line
sources, but I purchase from them because they provide the videos and tips
that allow me to fix my dryer. They deserve the business.

I have a 20 yearish old GE but it's electric. It stopped heating and
the problem was the circuit board. You could see on the board where
one of the "things" that looked like a diode had overheated. New
board was $100. Mine was a "series 90" as I recall. So you might pop
the control panel and take a peak at the electric board and see if it
looks like it's got fried spots. Along with the new board was some
slight revision to the wiring.

Thanks, will take a look. I had a dead computer in an Eclipse awhile back and it was going to be several hundred dollars by the time everyone was paid. So before they ordered it, I took it home and the circuit board had that burned capacitor smell. Found one clearly burned and 2 others just like it not burned. I researched it online and found a report that those particular capacitors were rated for too low a temperature, so I replaced all three with a higher temp range. Less than $2 total and fixed the problem.

After I bought the new board for my dryer I found some stuff online
where people had fixed their boards by replacing the burned
components, which I think were diodes. Don't know if that would have
been a long term fix since it didn't address the wiring changes that
went with the new board.

I did get to Mom's house to check the dryer,
yesterday. Maytag, fortunately. Good brand.

HSI glows, about 5 1/4 amps. Check the two
limit switches I could see, both had continuity.
One of the three coils on the gas valve was
open circuit. Called for prices, then went to
get a set of three coils. Replace the one that
was open. Leave the other two where I could find
them, on a shelf near by. Dryer works, again.

BTW, this was laproscopic repair, all working
through the access hatch at the lower right
front of the dryer. Did not have to take the
cabinet apart.

Mom is pleased.
