Default Condensors white or silver?

If a refrigerator is used outdoors, in the summer.
The condensor on the back, is black tubing. As
we know, black absorbs heat from the sun shine,
which makes the compressor work harder.

Of course, that condensor can be painted. Which
color paint is coolest in summer, and works best
to release the heat from the refrigerator? White, or
silver?

I'd vote for silver. The more it reflects the better.
But why is a fridge so exposed and so oriented outside
that it's even an issue? If it's that exposed I would
think there could be issues aside from the sun thing,
which is probably minor.

Temporary set up, for a camp that's only used during the summer.

One vote, silver.

Silver is a color of value, over the years. If you go to a fortune teller,
she wants you to cross her palm with silver. On the other hand, white
symbolizes purity. I need a few more votes.

The condensor is black because black radiates heat better. To make it
functioning that way, put an awning of some kind over the fridge to keep
solar radiation off of it. White or silver doesn't make a difference, as
long as it is as opaque as can be. In addition, rig a small fan up so
there is additional cooling when the fridge is in cooling mode.

If something is black, it will absorbe the most heat, it will also radiate
the most heat. It depends on if the air around the object is hotter or
colder than the object. As you move to white or silver, this abosrbs and
also gives off the least heat.

Being in or out of the sun has nothing to do with this. However if
something is in the sun and not shaded from it, the sun will cause black to
heat up faster than the silver or white from the rays of the sun.

Condensers and radiators are black for a reason. The darker object
emits/loses heat more efficiently. It also absorbs heat better but
when the source of heat is gone, heat will be released quicker. In
science class, teachers have been demonstrating the effect to students
for many years. In your case, I would leave the condenser black and find
a way to shade it from direct sunlight with something painted in a
light color. ^_^

There is even special paint for radiators, you don't want too thick a

Actually black "releases" heat better than other
colors! (In addition to absorbing heat better.)

Whatever paint you use will insulate it so it works not-as-well. Lighter colors
will cut down radiation from the consensor, making it less efficient. Shading it
from the sun is the obvious solution.

"Black" in the visible range doesn't matter much at the far infrared
wavelengths the refrigerator will be operating at. It matters some in direct
sunlight because there is a significant component of sunlight in the visible
range (duh!). My point is that its "color" in visible light doesn't mean a
lot. The emissivity at the operating point matters.

White or silver doesn't make a difference, as

Again, color doesn't matter, as far as the operation of the refrigerator,
itself. If the object is to reflect visible sunlight, white is better.

I could be wrong but the purpose of the coils is to dispel heat from the
compression. Paint them and they will do so less well. The possible
exception would be if they got hotter than the ambient temperature.

IOW, I wouldn't paint, might make some shade if they got a lot of sun.

Refrigerators & freezers should always be housed indoors, and even then
positively shielded from heat sources and direct solar radiation.
(Meaning zero direct sunlight.)

Bet you a buck if you read your refrigeration equipment manual, you'll
find these environmental requirements stated within.

Yes, as others have noted, black is by far the most efficient color far
as heat radiation goes... ever notice how condensers always come from
the factory painted black? Keeping the condenser free of dust/spooge,
and insuring free air circulation around it is a great long term energy
saving measure

If they are not hotter than the ambient temperature, they will not disple
heat, but they will absorbe the heat and try to carry more heat back to the
unit.
The opposite of what is wanted.

Paint will tend to act as an insulation of sorts. You can anadosie the
aluminum black and that should not make it act like insulation. That is
often done for electronic equipment heat sinks to make them work beter.

An argument could be made that a specific type of silver paint, that
with a high zinc content common in "cold galvanizing" types, might be a
good choice because the zInc may be more conductive to heat transfer
than an additional layer of regular paint.

That depends on the purpose. If it's to reflect sunlight, no, conduction
doesn't matter (could make even the situation worse). Anyway, the point is
that "white" is whiter than silver. White paint my have higher emissivity
than a mirror.

They *will* get hotter than the ambient temperature or the refrigerator can't
work. The whole idea is to pump heat from inside the 'fridge into those
coils, to get dissipated into the environment. If they're not hotter than the
environment, heat can't flow out of them.

IOW, I wouldn't paint, might make some shade if they got a lot of sun.

Air circulation outweighs radiation. Do you see air conditioner coils

If one had to put the coils in the sun, I would use a high heat silver
paint, which are usually thin coats. It's not just the coils heating from
the sun, it's the whole back, warming up the air which is supposed to be
cooling things down. Just painting the back surface would help out, not
touching the coils. Or best. Shade.

I think some backs are white, with black coils.

No, because the color, as seen by humans, is irrelevant. You're right,
though, conduction and (forced) convection a far larger factors than
emissivity.

Again, the "color" in the visible spectrum isn't important unless the surface
is emitting in the visible range (incandescing).

I think some backs are white, with black coils.

Yes, but that's still irrelevant. It's used in electronics because it conducts electricity well and resists corrosion, not because of heat conduction (or at least it's a minor factor).

How do you know that black paint doesn't radiate and absorb infrared
better too? Because it's not visible, you can't tell by looking but
you can by feeling.

I know that when I had a convertible with a black top, it was hot as
hell in there after it sat in the sun. Once I caught on, I've had
light green once and tan several time and it's almost comfortable even
after sitting in the mid-summer sun.

Similarly a black steering wheel is hot enough to hurt one's hands
when the inside of the car is hot. No other color I've had is. And
the black seats would burn the inside of my thighs when I wore shorts,
but tan and white don't do that.

And my home, which may well not have enough insulation in the attic,
was too hot to go upstairs when I had a dark shingle roof, even with a
roof fan. . The new roof is medium brown and it's comfortable now
with just a fan in the bedroom (and the roof fan) . However I used
to use the heat from the attic to warm the upstairs in the late fall
and early spring. That doesn't work anymore, because it doesn't get

The condensor is black because black radiates heat better. To make it
functioning that way, put an awning of some kind over the fridge to keep
solar radiation off of it.

Exactly. An awning. As easy as a piece of thick cardboard sitting
partly on top of the fridge with something to hold it down. Or a
tarp. And if painting it did help, which it
won't, it would hurt the fridge when you put it back inside.

I would NOT paint the lines, those lines need to be able to shed has
much heat as possible. Consider adding an extra cardboard/FRP/metal
back to keep the sun off the coils, leave plenty of space for air movement.

Yes, but that's still irrelevant. It's used in electronics because it
conducts electricity well and resists corrosion, not because of heat
conduction (or at least it's a minor factor).

it also reflects light (therefore heat) better than almost anything else

Any direct sunlight on the refrigerator (condenser or elsewhere) will
unnecessarily increase operating expense.

I'd vote for silver. The more it reflects the better.
But why is a fridge so exposed and so oriented outside
that it's even an issue? If it's that exposed I would
think there could be issues aside from the sun thing,
which is probably minor.

This ranks right up there with the debate on covering windows with aluminum
foil: Shiny side facing out or facing in.

The condensor is black because black radiates heat better. To make it
functioning that way, put an awning of some kind over the fridge to keep

"Black" in the visible range doesn't matter much at the far infrared
wavelengths the refrigerator will be operating at. It matters some in direct
sunlight because there is a significant component of sunlight in the visible
range (duh!). My point is that its "color" in visible light doesn't mean a
lot. The emissivity at the operating point matters.

White or silver doesn't make a difference, as
long as it is as opaque as can be. In addition, rig a small fan up so
there is additional cooling when the fridge is in cooling mode.

Again, color doesn't matter, as far as the operation of the refrigerator,
itself. If the object is to reflect visible sunlight, white is better.

That doesn't work anymore, because it doesn't get
as hot up there.

And the son of the owner of one of the two biggest department stores
in Indianapolis (Block's) built a house next to his parents on their
beautiful lot overlooking the White River. He had dark shingles
and 1 or 2 months later in the summer they were replaced with white

His parents house was old and grand. It was built, I think, before
home air-conditioning was invented, and I'm sure used a lot of design
features to keep it cool in the hot weather, including being shaded by
many trees. I suspect he was used to haviing the windows open and
when he married and built his own home, he still wanted his windows
open and no AC on most summer days, and so the dark hot roof was a
real problem for him. The builders chose roof color for style, but he
wanted white for comfort. And he had the money to change roofs a
short time after the house was built. And why shouldn't he, since
the roof lasted 20 years Ithink even then., 1962

Here's the google maps address of his house. 39.866245,-86.162188

I think it's the big white roof.;

You don't. That's the point. The color in visible light has little to do
with its emissivity at the (much) longer wavelengths. "White" paint might be
much better.

I know that when I had a convertible with a black top, it was hot as
hell in there after it sat in the sun. Once I caught on, I've had
light green once and tan several time and it's almost comfortable even

So was my white car. So? See below.

Similarly a black steering wheel is hot enough to hurt one's hands
when the inside of the car is hot. No other color I've had is. And
the black seats would burn the inside of my thighs when I wore shorts,
but tan and white don't do that.

So do my "cream" colored leather seats. So? See below.

And my home, which may well not have enough insulation in the attic,
was too hot to go upstairs when I had a dark shingle roof, even with a
roof fan. . The new roof is medium brown and it's comfortable now

Well, you do know that the sun emits energy in the visible range, right?

And the son of the owner of one of the two biggest department stores
in Indianapolis (Block's) built a house next to his parents on their
beautiful lot overlooking the White River.

Ah, because it was the White River, it was cool in the summer, right?

Yes, but that's still irrelevant. It's used in electronics because it conducts electricity well and resists corrosion, not because of heat conduction (or at least it's a minor factor).

It can also be vapor deposited to form a transparent, electrically conductive,
surface. This can be useful for heating a glass substrate (think: clearing
fog).

or on a parabolic reflector (not transparent) to gather more efficiently
especially at low light levels
