A young bear took some chunks out of my new lawn mower seat. What is good to
spray on plastic to deter the critter? Its either that or shoot the beast.

Not sure what to do about it, but I bet he was after the salt that you
sweated on the seat.

You could be right on that. I watched him licking the lid of my burn barrel
as well. I could put out the remains of an old salt block used for cattle.
That might satisfy him and keep him from damaging more stuff.

Either that, or attract a herd of bear?

Never know, could make things better
or worse. I'd try it, and see.

If you don't like bears you shouldn't live in bear country.

Your neighbors also know nothing of bears...?

Human urine can repel deer. Maybe you can try peeing on the seat when
you park it.

Ammonia is supposed to deter them a bit too. I'd try wiping down the
seat and surrounding area with it. I bet Google can get you thousands
of hits.

Shooting, depending on where you live, can put you in jail, fines,
etc.

I'd check with your farm and garden. I did a
google on bear repellant, and came up with a
lot of brands of pepper spray.

Got to be something people don't notice, but
which tastes bad to bears. Can you get attorney
juice?

Park the mower in a garage or barn? Don't shoot the bear unless you
are ready to eat the animal, donate the meat to a food bank charity or
follow the law in your location (where are you?) about shooting bears.

If legal to shoot by your state law, they make a nice rug in front of
the fire place...

Giggle. I've seen one guy go to federal prison for six months.

His crime: harassing a bear on federal land. The bear ran up a tree
and the game warden observed this terrible crime.

We had a bear break into our shed to get at dog kibble. After 3
attacks, the bear finally ripping the door clean off, we called
CO Dept of Wildlife (DOW). They said do only one thing. Call the
DOW, who will come out, trap the bear, and relocate it. It's the only
alternative in CO, where it's a felony to shoot a bear. You goin' to
the big house if you do and don't have a life n' death excuse or a
bear tag.

That will be as effective as trap and deport, on the south border.

My sate (Nevada) just this past year, established legality for
shooting a bear. It provided law for hunting bears.

Some people began to suddenly develop and experience apoplexy, not
understanding bears were killed before 1864, when Nevada became a
state.

Heck Lincoln's portrait was shot in the state house in Carson City.

I am a landowner in Alberta. Its legal to shoot bears any time in the agricultural area...no tag required. I just hate to shoot them if there are
other choices. If he becomes a pest I will just have to call our "Fish and
Wildlife" guys and have him trapped.

Thanks for the come-back.

wow-- I'm surprised there are so few bears in NV. [45 permits only-
and the season will end when 20 are harvested] About 1300 were
harvested in NY last year-- They are becoming real nuisances even in
cities.

Back to the op-- Call whoever controls bears in your state to see
what they recommend. Your taxes are paying for their expertise-- and
*they* are the experts on your local bears.

There are few bears in NV. They usually filter in from the northern /
westerly parts of the state or come from California on the western
border mountains Maybe the Sierra Mountains.

Same with mountain lions.

When I lived in upstate NY, I worried about bears and attack moose.

I think shooting or trapping are only real options. Unless you have an
electric fence around your property you might deter him with something
like capsaicin sprayed on things but who knows what else he might get into.

We should have a moose season within a few years-- They are not so
rare anymore.

You may be off the mark here. When I mentioned to a high

coming so close to my wilderness camp in the evening, he
said they are after the salt in my urine.

Get a fence charger the size that will energize about two miles of fence.
Just remember that you have it on by hanging red flags from the steering
wheel, or some other way of not getting caught in your own trap.

Can't say for sure, I've never had a deer problem.

Quite a few urine recipes here, as well as other.

Dial Soap or Lifebuoy Soap Drill a hole in the bar and hang it with
fishing line. Hang one bar from each small tree or every 3 feet on
large trees.

Miscellaneous
Human hair, coyote urine, moth balls, bone tar oil, rancid
grease, feathermeal (dried chicken feathers),dried blood or blood meal.
These can be put alone or in combination in a nylon stocking, mesh
bag, or plastic bag with holes about 3 feet off the ground.
Fabric softener cloths can be hung every 3 feet. Also ammonia-soaked
rags can be used.

Pee with a purpose

by patt
(colbert, WA. )

Take old socks, stuff them with other old socks, or batting, like the
kind you put in a quilt.
Tie these to the trees or the garden fence.
Take human urine out there on a weekly basis, use an old can and just
dip the old socks in them enough to soak the stuffing.
Or easier yet, just send out the men to do the job.
Or the kids, or the old man, or fill the can yourself.
