Not sure what to do about it, but I bet he was after the salt that you
sweated on the seat.

You could be right on that. I watched him licking the lid of my burn barrel
as well. I could put out the remains of an old salt block used for cattle.
That might satisfy him and keep him from damaging more stuff.
