Then I finally realized the detent was worn and the button had to be *very* firmly held down for (whatever the thermocouple activated part is) to engage. --Vic |

I can't remember details, but an old girlfriend couldn't light her waterheater. I had trouble too until I finally pushed or twisted something more than I thought I should have to. I got there at 11PM. I was done at 11:30 or 45 and then she offered me something to drink. I didnt' want to sleep with her, but I thought she should have offered me a drink before I was ready to leave, like 10 minutes after I got there, or she should should have offered me a drink and food when I was done. What say yeL? --Vic |

What say yeL? I remember her now. When we were dating she had had me and a older woman over for dinner. The woman and I got pasta, and she served herself chicken or meat. She had some strange reason she needed the meat, but we didn't. She also invited me for Thanksgiving near NYC, 200 miles from here, and on the way back read the paper or slept almost all the way, while I drove her car. She said she was inviting me since no one else had, but I had the feeling she needed someone to drive. That's why I was so picky about how she treated me when I came out at 11 PM to fix her water heater. Who needs hot water that bad anyhow, come to think of it. That's why God gave us a stove. --Vic |

I'd want to take another look at how the flame is touching
the thermocouple. Next, I'd consider replacing the gas valve. Others have suggested knob position, which is cheaper than gas valve. Or pressing harder on the button, which is also cheaper. -- Christopher A. Young Learn more about Jesus www.lds.org .. "atwittsend" wrote in message ... Sounds like you believe that is ok. Heating the thermocouple opens a safety shutoff valve in the gas valve. Make sure the thermocouple connection to the gas valve is tight as well. Pushing the button in bypasses that safety valve to allow you to light the pilot. If everything else checks out then your problem is most likely the gas valve. Unfortunately those can be pricey. However they are also really common if you want to try to find a used one or one off ebay. |

Assuming the new thermocouple is good, the only thing left is the gas valve. How about the nozzle of the pilot light. My ventless has a thermocouple/nozzle assembly. I replaced it 3 years in a row until I read to give the nozzle a blast with some canned air. Now they last 4-5 years. If the op's thermocouple didn't include a replacement of the nozzle, it might have a speck obstructing the flame enough to not heat the thermocouple up enough. Jim |

My guess is he's hoping agains odds for a completely new suggestion other than buying a $100+ gas valve. |

She was going shopping and I was going to go visit a friend and his wife. I said, If they invite me for dinner or after dinner and to spend the night, is it okay if you assume that if I"m not back at the car by N:nn, I'm staying with them, and you go home by yourself? She got angry. "I told you I can't drive in NYC" I said, "I asked if it was all right. Just say No. And look, right up there a block in front of us is a sign for the tunnel. Just turn right there and left a half-block after that, at the next sign, and you'll be on the road to your sister's." She was still angry. She did have a good idea, to go to the wonderful aquarium in Camden and then take a different bridge across the Delaware than the one backed up with Thanksgiving travelers, but after we got back here, I resigned my job as chauffer. -- Christopher A. I can definitely see that, with a natural gas nozzle. But in reading about propane torches, I came across a guy who wanted to clean that orifice with thin wire. Is that possible? It looks impossible to me. |
