If you're talking about mig welding, it's no problem. I've used fluxcore
mild steel wire to weld sstl to carbon steel.
You'll need to grind away the zinc on the pipe where the weld will be.

Sure, you just prepare the pipe by removing the zinc and then you are
just dealing with mild steel. Just remember you will need to coat the
weld site with something to prevent rust.

Any zinc-rich paint will do a dandy job. Look for brands like Co-Galv,
etc. Popular with folks who do work on chain link fences, for example.

If you plan to weld galvanized metal, wait until you finish welding
yourself a coffin. Galv metal is highly toxic when welded and you
will die from the fumes. But you wont be the first, hundreds of
thousands of men lie 6 feet under because of this. Breathe these
fumes for about 30 seconds and say goodbye. Except you wont have time
to say that word. You'll just drop dead.

This is actually best done with a high nickle stick weld.

Its amazing at the crap you get from a question answered by ignorant
contestants.

To weld stainless to galvanived pipe, first understand that you are
actually welding stainless to carbon after you totally remove the
galvanize from the weld zone.

Next you will need filler material or shielded rod (depending your
process) that is designed for just that job like eg: 316L SS

As far as galvanize being highly toxic, bunk you would have to
purposely suck up a lot of the smoke to get even sick temporarily.

Of course its best to breathe none.

Finally coat the welded area with a cold galvanizing spray you can get
just about anywhwre that sells paint.

Just FYI, I worked in a scrap yard running a crane and cutting steel
into chunks for the shredder. A co-worker was cutting galvanized water
tank and got a snoot full of the smoke. He had a nose bleed for a
couple days and was really sick to his stomach and made a hospital trip.

Now I don't know that he got sick from the galvanized smoke or something
else in the tank, but we 'sure' were careful to be 'up wind' when
cutting after that.
