Default Welding stainless steel to galvanized pipe ?

Just FYI, I worked in a scrap yard running a crane and cutting steel
into chunks for the shredder. A co-worker was cutting galvanized water
tank and got a snoot full of the smoke. He had a nose bleed for a
couple days and was really sick to his stomach and made a hospital trip.

Now I don't know that he got sick from the galvanized smoke or something
else in the tank, but we 'sure' were careful to be 'up wind' when
cutting after that.

Its amazing at the crap you get from a question answered by ignorant
contestants.

To weld stainless to galvanived pipe, first understand that you are
actually welding stainless to carbon after you totally remove the
galvanize from the weld zone.

Next you will need filler material or shielded rod (depending your
process) that is designed for just that job like eg: 316L SS

As far as galvanize being highly toxic, bunk you would have to
purposely suck up a lot of the smoke to get even sick temporarily.

Of course its best to breathe none.

Finally coat the welded area with a cold galvanizing spray you can get
just about anywhwre that sells paint.
