GE dishwasher recall "repair": think twice!
Just had our dishwasher "repaired" and wanted to share my experience. Had I known the results, I wouldn't have had it "repaired" (opting for some alternate solution). I'm not telling anyone what to do, just relaying how I feel about it... The recall is about the jetdry tank leaking, and causing wire damage. The repair replaces the old wires with new ones of exactly the same type. The repair removes all the sound-dampening insulation from the door and toe kicks.[*] The repair replaces a perfectly good toe kick with one that doesn't fit quite right. The repair does NOT do anything about the tank leaking. As a result, the dishwasher is now very noisy, so much so that I've already ordered new insulation for the door to replace what they removed, recall or no recall. GE refuses to return the unit to its original condition. We are never buying GE again. [*] They install a tiny paper napkin thing so that technically they can claim it was "replaced". |

I've been considering whether to have the repair done and you've just about made up my mind not to. I probably should open the door and see if I've got any sign of a leak. Roger Grady To reply by email, remove "qlfit." from address Too bad I didn't get to see your note before I asked them to "repair" the dishwasher. Well, my story is even worse than yours! Two people showed up - it apparently takes two GE technicians to replace a wire harness and rip out the sound insulation from the door. Before they left, I asked them to test it to make sure it works - they turned it on and declared it to be OK. Two hours later the dishwasher was still churning water, but now it started leaking out on the floor. The clock mechanism appears to have stopped, but it was apparently pumping water in. I tried to call the recall number. After 1.5 hrs of listening to pretty bad music I finally got a human beeing on the line! I told him I needed an emergency repair of their "repair" because water is leaking on the floor. After putting me on hold, he came back and told me there was nothing they could do! I asked for the supervisor, Shawn, who suggested he would send an urgent Email to GE to call me. I have to believe he did it, but of course, I haven't heard from GE. The lesson for me is: DON'T BUY GE! And for those of you getting the "repair," make sure the technicians don't leave until the entire cycle is done. Saci |
