So, is this good or bad?

[A Whirlpool-Maytag alliance would command a 48% market share for
major appliances, ahead of 26% and 20% for General Electric Co. (GE:
news, chart, profile) and Electrolux (SE:000010381: news, chart,
profile) , respectively, according to estimates compiled by Prudential
Equity Group.]

This has all the charm of the Compaq-HP merger. Whirlpool is
overpaying paying for more or less the same lineup of products. If
Maytag couldn't compete with Whirlpool in the first place why would
anyone believe that Whirlpool will vamp up Maytag's line to be better
than W's lineup? It looks more like a means of eliminating a
competitor (M) to improve market share.

This overpayment can be easily recouped by reducing the quality, but
not the price of the Maytag line. Look for a significant quality
reduction in future Maytag products.

Maytag quality has already hit bottom in my experience...... at least with
respect to dishwashers.
